Amazon Kindle How-to Series Replacing the Battery on Your Amazon Kindle

Since Amazon Kindle is a relatively recent innovation, most owners have not had their Kindle e-book reader long enough to require a new battery. But if you use your Kindle frequently and charge it often so you can get to the point where the battery does not seem to last as long when your Kindle was new. This is not a usual phenomenon - most rechargeable batteries have a "life" measured in the number of re-charges.

Another reason you may wish to change the battery on your Kindle is that you must use it for a long time and can not charge it. For example, let's say you're planning a trip with a long international airplane flight. In this case you can take two (or more) fully charged batteries Kindle with you and replace them as needed.

To conserve battery power, the Kindle is entering a "sleep" mode if you have not read an e-book or listening to an audio book for a long period. You will recognize when your Kindle enters "sleep mode" as a screen saver on the display in-place for the book you read. Kindle comes with built-in screen saver, or you can check the website in the resource box below to learn how-to create your own.

Your Amazon Kindle has a built-in battery meter, see bottom right side of the screen. The battery power meter is right next to the wireless signal strength meter. It is sometimes easy to get these meters confused. The wireless signal strength is displayed as a bar chart with a small antenna in-front of the first bar. When your battery meter shows almost all white you know it's either time to recharge your Kindle or replace the battery. If the power meter goes down quickly after a charge it may be time to replace the battery.

Here is how you replace the battery on your Amazon Kindle:

1. Turn off your Kindle

2. Find a soft cloth or other means to protect the front of your Kindle

8. The battery is attached to your Kindle by a white plastic connector and multiple threads

9. Gently pull the white connector back until the battery is disconnected from your Kindle

10. Attach your new battery by sliding the white wires plug into the correct slot in the battery compartment
