The Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center.

The Elk Lake School Board voted last Tuesday, April 21, to approve funding for the project. Board president Chuck Place emphasized that this step does not commit the district to proceeding with the project. A public hearing must be held before that approval can happen, he said. However, acceptance of financing at this time is necessary to stay on the proposed schedule for the project.
According to Superintendent William Bush, the expansion project will cost approximately $8.1 million. The district approved a straight mortgage plan from Peoples National Bank to finance that amount over 20 years. The interest rate will be 3.5 percent for the first 10 years of the loan; 3.65 percent for the next five years; and a fluctuating rate between 3.5 and 5.0 percent, depending on the economic market at the time, for the final five years.
Bush said the district looked at funding packages from many lending institutions and bond issuers, and the Peoples rates were by far the best available.
Since the career and technology center is not in itself a taxing entity, the project would be paid for by tuitions and fees paid by its eight member schools, as are all of the center's expenses.
In addition to Elk Lake, member school districts are Blue Ridge, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose Area, Mountain View, Susquehanna Community and Tunkhannock Area. In regards to Elk Lake's share, Bush said the project would likely result in less than a one mill tax increase over the course of the construction project. He said he couldn't speak directly for the other school districts, but he believes it is well within their budgets to handle the cost as well.
One reason the cost can be kept down is that adding programs will almost certainly increase the number of students at the center, Bush said. He estimated conservatively that enrollment would increase from 350 to 500 students the first year, and could be even higher after that.
The expansion as currently planned would have the capacity for far more that that number of students, the superintendent said.
As for programs, Bush said the decision as to what would be added was based primarily on surveys of the needs of the area business community, as well as the desires and interests of students. Data on future employment needs from the state Department of Labor and Industry was also considered. Programs that would be added include auto body collision and repair technician; vehicle maintenance and small engine repair technology; electrical, electronics and communications engineering technology (nanotechnology); health information and medical records technology; criminal justice / police science. To accommodate these programs, extensive renovations would be needed to the current career center, as well as construction of additional facilities. In November 2008, the school district contracted with architect John Kropcho & Associates to research possible expansion locations and designs. These were used in obtaining the financing. Final plans won't be drafted until the district commits to the project.
According to Bush, a public hearing will probably be held early this summer, which would enable the district to stay on its planned timetable.
If the project is approved, final design will be done in late summer, with major construction done during the 2009-2010 school year. Renovations to the existing space would have to be done during the summer of 2010, when classes are not in session, Bush said. That would enable the expanded center to be open to students by the fall of 2010.
An advantage to doing the project now is that a significant amount of the cost would be reimbursed by the state Department of Education. Bush said the state would pay nearly 43 percent of the cost over the term of the mortgage. That amount would be guaranteed over the 20-year term, he said.
The district is eligible for that reimbursement because it has been more than 20 years since the last construction project at the career center.
(Because the career center is considered a separate entity, other projects in the Elk Lake district don't count in that timeline.) In another matter, the board continued its examination of the district's 2009-2010 budget.
As has been its practice for the past several years, the board reviews about a third of the budget each month in March, April and May of each year, with the final totals included in the May meeting. This month, Bush presented figures on a number of administrative categories, such as the superintendent's and principals' offices, student health services, tax collection costs and legal services.
Bush noted that in these areas, costs are expected to be up about 3 percent over what was budgeted in 2008-2009. The primary reason is increased salaries, he said. The items on the agenda for the May meeting will include the largest expenditures, such as instructional and special education expenses, Bush said.
The board also approved the 2009-2010 school calendar. The school year is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 for students, with teachers reporting a day earlier. The last day of classes is set for Thursday, June 3, 2010, with graduation on June 12. The calendar has two built-in snow days, on Jan. 18 and April 5, 2010. Others would be made up at the end of the year, Bush said.
The date scheduled for Susquehanna County Dairy Day (in 2010 it's Friday, March 5) will no longer be a class day for students. To alleviate parking problems, the day will be an in-service day for teachers. Also, for the second consecutive year, classes on every Wednesday except for the first day will dismiss at 2 p.m. for teacher prep time in the afternoons.

Food Science Student invent in U.S

Virginia Tech students have invented Spice n Easy, flavour spikes that will quickly and easily flavour meat. The product was developed by the Virginia Tech Food Science and Technology (FST) Team as a unique way to add flavour to meat products without the wait and mess of a traditional marinade. Nuggets of flavour, which are easily inserted into the meat, dissolve during cooking, releasing their flavour. Spice n Easy can be used to roast, grill, and slow-cook chicken, beef, fish, and pork. Made from all natural ingredients, the product does not need to be refrigerated and has a long shelf life. Spice n Easy has been created in Cajun and Italian flavours.
Challenges :
The FST team encountered a number of challenges with their idea of a meat seasoning that would dissolve during cooking. "The first problem was how to make a marinade inflexible enough to be inserted into meat," said team leader Denise Gardner of Reading, Pa., an FST master's degree candidate.
They decided to try a hard candy approach. Sucrose and water were heated, spices were added, and the product was cooled and shaped. In addition to binding the spices, the sucrose adds sweetness and preserves spice quality. The students experimented with raw materials, different shapes and sizes, cooling times, mold components, and packaging to create the gourmet seasoning.
Meats tested :
“We’ve tested the product in chicken, beef, and pork and found that it worked well in numerous applications,” said Kevin Holland of Bradford., Pa., a co-leader and FST doctoral candidate. The students also conducted a product safety study and prepared a plan for commercial scale production and a marketing plan.
The students anticipate the item will be popular. "Eight out of 10 families own an outdoor grill," Gardner said. "The increase in the use of outdoor grills has encouraged the use of sauces and marinades, which give variety and uniqueness to meals.” “Our data shows that 73 percent of potential customers would be interested in purchasing Spice n Easy." said Sabrina Hannah of Elverson, Pa. a co-leader and FST doctoral candidate.
Jackie Reed, licensing associate with Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties Inc., is working with the team to develop their invention into a product that will make its way to grocery store shelves. "The food industry is always looking for new products, and the FST students and faculty are very creative. We hope to find an industrial partner to help make this a commercial product," she said.
In addition to Gardner, Holland, and Hannah, team members are undergraduates Fatemeh Ataei of Karaj, Iran; Luman Chen of Hangzhou, China; and Cynthia Qin Li of Zhejiang, China; master’s degree students Marnie Rognlien of Warrenton, Va.; Lynn Ann Robertson of Axton, Va; Denise Gardner of Reading, Pa.; Robert Moore of Floyd, Va.; and Christian Samperio of Guatemala City, Guatemala; and Ph.D. students Govindaraj Dev Kumar of Chennai, India; and Paul Sarnoski of Ashley, Pa., all FST majors.

SUCCESSFUL GROWTH STRATEGIES, COACHING AND ASSESSMENT OF LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Compelling evidence about which leadership skills are especially vital to successful growth strategies has just been released in a new study of 300+ C-level leaders and heads of operating units. While nothing new about the fundamentals of executive leader competencies was discovered, the specifics that are associated with different types of strategies appear to add new knowledge that coaches can draw upon with greater confidence.

This summary will highlight the challenges of three kinds of organizational growth and three sets of executive skills that were associated with success in each strategy. For a comparison of these fundamentals to our Executive Leadership survey, see figure 1.

For coaches and consultants, it is second nature to identify the strategic direction of our clients. The information in this study will help clarify the organization's type of strategy --organic, strategic alliances, or mergers and acquisitions--and provide additional information on how to prioritize the skills around that strategy. Another complication for coaches and their clients are the transitions from one strategy to another. Add to that the real-world situations of some organizations whereby they are pursuing a combination of these strategies and you can see the value in knowing what skills are required for success.

Organic Growth. These are the challenges cited most often by the 300+ leaders who responded to the survey: cultivating a satisfied and loyal customer base and responding to customer pressure for better products and services. The corresponding leadership capabilities included focusing on the customer, sticking with priorities, executing, and innovating. Nothing new here about leadership, of course, but the companies that reported greater organic growth called these out as mission-critical.

Growth through Strategic Alliances. Successful leaders of this strategy cited these challenges: alignment of goals, plans and organizational structures, information sharing and making good decisions. The corresponding leadership skills included communicating a compelling vision, building trust, engaging others and building networks and informal links.

Growth through M&A. Challenges included retaining top talent and demonstrating value to investors. The skills emphasized were: focusing on market trends and competition, bridging differences in styles, values, and cultures, adapting to change, and continuous process improvement.

One final set of imperatives is cited as common to all growth strategies:

* Understanding customers' unmet needs
* Communicating clear strategy, goals and metrics
* Setting performance objectives
* Building a climate of ownership
* Coaching and listening to others
* Keeping organizations focused on strategy
* Challenging the status quo
* External focus

The 300+ survey respondents were a "highly seasoned group…from a range of industries and regions around the world", equally balanced between EMEA, North America and APAC. All of the companies selected equaled or exceeded their industries in gross revenue and profitability; more than half of them achieved even higher levels in the last 3 years.

We were fortunate to hear a presentation of this research recently at the 2009 annual owners meeting of ISA, the Association of Learning Providers. Ed Boswell, CEO of The Forum Corporation and a key advisor to the research team, provided a full copy of the study as well as helpful diagrams that are not in the study. We highly recommend the full study to all of our clients and coaches: One Size Doesn't Fit All: the Distinct Leadership Capabilities for Organic, Alliance, and M&A Growth. The Booth Company Releases New 360 Feedback Survey for Senior Middle Managers

The Booth Company, an international provider of leadership development surveys, announces the release of its new survey for senior middle managers, “Advanced Management Practices.” This survey contains 77 questions that combine a focus on the strategic requirements of executives while also concentrating on the management skills needed by middle managers.

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) April 23, 2009 -- The Booth Company, an international provider of leadership development surveys, announces the release of its new survey for senior middle managers, “Advanced Management Practices”. This survey contains 77 questions that combine a focus on the strategic requirements of executives while also concentrating on the management skills needed by middle managers.

The Advanced Management Practices (AMP) survey is a 360 degree feedback assessment that provides higher level managers with feedback about their management and strategic leadership skills. Dr. Daniel Booth, CEO of the Booth Company, states that “the demands on the first line supervisor to be more creative and strategic have pulled our middle-management survey, Leadership Competencies for Managers, into the world of front-line managers and left a gap between that and our Executive Leadership survey. By keeping this survey in the management series we are able to provide something close to the executive survey at lower cost.” He continues, “The survey is being well-received by multi-national companies in its English version, and it will soon be available in other languages.”

The survey is being well-received by multi-national companies in its English version, and it will soon be available in other languages.
The AMP feedback report is in TBC’s new simplified format. Derek Murphy, President of The Booth Company, states that “this format puts the narrative text online for the participant, reducing the size of the feedback report. The same data presentations, as seen in TBC’s standard reports, remain - including comparisons to normative data throughout. AMP is normed against senior mid-managers, providing them with a more relevant benchmark than the norms for front-line and middle-managers. Some clients are using the survey in its generic form. Others are finding it wonderfully adaptable to their situation with minor customization.”

Effective advanced management practices can be learned by following the sequential steps in the Advanced Management Practices Task Cycle®. The Task Cycle® comprises six sequential phases that are relevant to managing and leading for change. Eighteen skills are measured under these six Task Cycle® phases: Entrepreneurial Vision, Planning for the Future, Maximizing Human Resources, Feedback, Driving toward Success, and Recognition. The "outcome dimensions" include trust, tension in the team and a measure of overall effectiveness.

The AMP Task Cycle® assesses the vision of the senior level mid-manager, his or her ability to plan for the future, the skills needed to manage, motivate, and lead others, and the drive to achieve operational and strategic goals, as well as his or her impact on the team.

About The Booth Company:

State, national initiatives on climate will unnecessary

Last month, Democratic state Rep. Greg Vitali sent out an e-mail entitled ''Pennsylvania can lead the fight against global warming.'' He was trumpeting House Bill 80, which would require Pennsylvania's public utilities, such as PECO and PPL, to buy more of their power from ''renewable resources such as wind and solar.'' This legislation would require the commonwealth to develop and operate carbon-dioxide capture and sequestering networks. Let me get right to the point. This is just the first of a plethora of efforts on the state and national scale to foist on the poor consumer a series of measures that are not at all necessary now or in the future. The enforced control of carbon emissions is a grave danger to the standard of living of every citizen. On the state and national level, they are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars of taxes and penalties on energy producers. The game is to pretend that these enormous charges will be borne by those big public utilities, not by John Q. Citizen.
This is a big lie. In every case, those costs would be passed on to you, and they would be enormous. Your automobile fuel would go up in price, your propane would go up in price, your diesel fuel would go up in price, your home heating oil would go up in price, and your electricity would go up in price -- by billions of dollars. For years now, the Cambridge crowd, the Washington Beltway crowd, and the popular media like this newspaper have been trying to sell a very one-sided story about so-called global warming. It's a field that I have followed closely for 20 years. I have concluded that increasing carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is not in any way a major or material threat to our well being, now or in the future. I conclude that there is unequivocal scientific evidence that, while CO2 is certainly a greenhouse gas, its effect varies with the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. The effect of CO2, per unit of CO2, decreases as the amount of CO2 increases. Our atmosphere already contains enough CO2 so that more will not make a material difference. The climate has always been variable, and it always will be. There has been some warming of our atmosphere over the past four centuries, but it long predated the burning of carbon fuels, and it is explained by the variable output of the sun, celestial mechanics and other such factors not under our control. Now, if you read the newspaper, you would think that the scientific community was unanimous that a global warming catastrophe is on the way. Nothing could be further from the truth. A few weeks ago, Dr. William Happer of Princeton, one of the world's most distinguished physicists, gave testimony before Congress substantially supporting the position espoused by this column. Vaclav Klaus, president of the Czech Republic, who is chairman of the European Community, gave a similar speech to the European Union.
I advise everyone who's interested to read a book called ''Fire, Ice and Paradise'' by H. Leighton Steward. If you e-mail me at cdsnelling@nni.com, I will be glad to send you a copy of Professor Happer's testimony to Congress, a copy of the European Union testimony, and tell you where you can find a copy of ''Fire, Ice and Paradise.''
What do you suppose the most common greenhouse gas is in our atmosphere? Well, it's water. Water is 95 percent of the total. If it is so that global warming is not a material threat to us or to our great-grandchildren, then why are the politicians making such a fuss about it? There are a lot of reasons. For one thing, liberals have never approved of the way we live. They would like us all to live in concentrated cities, not in the suburbs. They don't like us driving our automobiles and they don't like the automobiles we drive. They think we should all be riding trains and bicycles. The whole idea that people should choose their lifestyles in a free market is anathema to the liberals. Is there any good news in this? Yes, indeed. When polled, most citizens are not concerned about global warming. Even with 10 years of the Al Gore religion being stuffed down our throats, most people still know better.
Two weeks ago, we read that the ocean wasn't going to just rise three feet, it was going to rise an extra nine inches in the northeast. How do we know? Because some eager ''scientist'' developed a computer model, totally unverified in any way, shape or form that predicts this ocean rise. Go to sleep tonight and sleep soundly. We are not threatened by global warming; we are threatened by the liberals' desire to run our lives right down to the last jot.

Domestic armaments said to 'China'

A government-backed science group says many of China's homemade weapons systems are world-class, reflecting the defense industry's new confidence and underscoring its ambitions of becoming a major arms exporter.
Steady advances have produced a solid foundation for Chinese-made armored fighting vehicles, missile systems and other weaponry, according to a report by the government's China Association for Science and Technology.
"In some areas, Chinese weapons have either achieved or are very close to achieving international advanced standards," the report said, without giving details. Long reliant on Russia for advanced military hardware, China has invested heavily in its domestic defense industry in recent years, notching up breakthroughs such as the J-10 jet fighter and DF-31 intercontinental ballistic missile. China already makes licensed versions of the Russian S-27 fighter jet, but claims to have mastered the technology to make its own advanced aircraft.
Progress has been spurred by the steady growth of military spending — last year the budget jumped 17.6 percent to 417.8 billion yuan ($61 billion) — drawing concern over China's intentions from the U.S. and neighbors like Japan.
Beijing insists it intends no aggression and says much of the spending has gone into upgrading weapons, uniforms, training and living standards for the 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army.
As an arms exporter, China has long serviced customers in the developing world, including isolated dictatorships like Sudan and Zimbabwe, with simple, cheap technology such as China's version of the Kalashnikov rifle and the JL-8 jet trainer developed jointly with Pakistan.
Advances in technology may allow it to expand that customer base at lower prices than similar technology sold by Russia, France, Britain or the U.S.
China undertook sweeping reforms of the defense industry in the late 1990s to introduce competition and better efficiency, but still releases little solid data about the size and scale of its arms production.
The sprawling but often poorly trained and equipped PLA used to keep its equipment hidden from sight, leading to speculation by foreign military observers that its technical level was so low it constituted an embarrassment.
Such attitudes have begun to change and recent years have seen an ever-growing degree of openness. Later this month, the Chinese navy plans to host ships from the United States and a handful of other nations in an international fleet review to mark its 60th anniversary.
With most of China's perceived threats to its sovereignty emanating from the ocean, the navy has been a particular beneficiary of modernization, adding advanced Yuan class diesel electric submarines alongside Russian imports such as the Sovremenny frigates and Kilo class subs. Chinese officers have stated that the addition of one or more aircraft carriers is simply a matter of time, although its not known if work has begun on one yet.
China imports large amounts of oil for its booming economy, and is worried about keeping sea lanes open. It also has disputes with several countries over islands, many in the South China Sea.

The Booth Company Partners with George Fox University for 360 Degree Feedback

The Booth Company’s 360 degree feedback surveys are an integral component of the MBA program at George Fox University. As part of a course on organizations, Jim Steele, Ed.D., invites his students to choose one of several surveys that offers the best fit for their professional needs.

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) April 9, 2009 -- The Booth Company’s 360 degree feedback surveys are an integral component of the MBA program at George Fox University. As part of a course on organizations, Jim Steele, Ed.D., invites his students to choose one of several surveys that offers the best fit for their professional needs. Learners are encouraged to select raters from their business contacts, bringing the voices of their working associates into the academic process. By providing learners with a firsthand view of how they are perceived in their work environments, students are confronted with evidence of the impact of their own leadership behaviors.

Students are pleased with the 360 degree survey process. “I chose the survey participants carefully to assure honest, open feedback,” said credit union CEO and 2007 George Fox MBA graduate Barbara Mathey. “Although some of the results were difficult to see, it was exactly the feedback I was hoping for. The insight gave me the opportunity to reevaluate and change my approach to more effectively use my leadership skills and to obtain additional skills where I was lacking.”

I chose the survey participants carefully to assure honest, open feedback
Learners appreciate the flexibility to choose a survey relevant to their specific needs. From a teaching and facilitation perspective, the common design of the surveys makes it possible to provide a single overview to the survey process, Task Cycle, and feedback reports, even though multiple surveys are in use. Individual coaching sessions after the survey results are distributed provide ample opportunity for students to explore the unique elements of the specialized survey results.

The George Fox MBA’s Executive Track (mba.georgefox.edu) attracts sophisticated mid-career adults looking for a learning experience that is both academically challenging and relevant to their professional lives. As leaders and executives in a variety of organizations ranging from technology to health care to not-for-profit agencies, their learning needs are often driven by the unique characteristics of the working environment. Often, an executive who experiences one of the Booth 360 degree surveys as a student will seek a follow-up survey to evaluate progress. Consultant and Air National Guard Reservist Joseph Brewer, a 2008 George Fox MBA graduate, observed that “the power of this tool appears to be in the ability to show professional development, and that analysis comes only through the second review. I was able to see those areas that improved and it was an enlightening and rewarding experience.” He concluded that “this tool will remain in my professional inventory as a means to develop strengths.”

Jim Steele, Ed.D., GPHR, is Assistant Professor of Management in George Fox University’s School of Management. Jim has assisted students and organizations in implementing 360 degree feedback surveys from the Booth Company since the early 1990s. George Fox University, with its main campus in Newberg, Oregon, and centers in Boise and Portland that offer the MBA, is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees including the Master in Business Administration and Doctor of Management.

The Booth Company publishes and administers 360 degree feedback surveys based on the Task Cycle®, a validated theory of leadership and management roles. Search engine geared - Reflects online activity

College students are used to being in constant communication with their peers. Now, they can get constant updates on what those people are looking at online. OneRiot.com is a search engine geared toward college students by using their generation’s need to be in the know about anything from news to entertainment. The site was launched in Boulder, Colo., in November 2008. In March, the company began recruiting representatives to spread the word on college campuses across the country. “It’s hard for students to make it through class without checking their phone or text messages,” Nancy Baym, professor of communication studies, said. “If they have a laptop they have trouble staying off the Web. There is an expectation of continuous communication.” Ginevra Figg, marketing manager for OneRiot, said the company’s objective was to index the “real-time” Web by arranging current information and displaying what articles people were looking at. The site features articles and videos on topics ranging from politics to celebrities. Figg said said the company has more than two million users who have agreed to have their Internet-surfing activity tracked, which helps OneRiot.com determine the content placed on the site. “The crucial question on college students’ minds is ‘What doesn’t Google answer?’ and that’s what’s going on right now,” Figg said. “It’s important that we bring these guys the hottest results on these topics. It allows college students to become trendsetters and stay ahead of the game.” Social networking and interactive sites such as Facebook, MySpace and You Tube are frequented by students regularly. Nobleza Asuncion-Lande, professor of communication studies, said these public forms of communication were becoming more and more a part of students’ lives. “My students from ten years ago are very different from my students right now in terms of being connected,” Asuncion-Lande said. Becca Nyman, St. Louis, Mo., junior and marketing representative for OneRiot, said she and her friends looked at videos and articles on the site during study breaks. She said the site stayed timely because information was updated constantly. “With the fast paced world we are living in everything has to be current and this gives it to you,” Nyman said. Although Baym said she thought search engines were great resources, she said it was important for people to recognize credible and complete information and baseless claims. “I think there is a shallow conception of information in that whatever Google or Wikepedia says is all I need to know about something,” Baym said.

Migratory birds exit Himachal Pradesh - Pong wetlands

With the lengthening of daylight hours, thousands of migratory birds have left this wetland in Himachal Pradesh for their summer habitats north of the Himalayas. Nestled in the Kangra valley, the Pong Dam wetlands are among the favourite winter grounds of migratory birds.
"Almost 90% of the migratory birds have embarked on their long journey back to their native homes," wildlife range officer (Pong wetlands) D.S. Dadwal said. "Some of the birds prefer to stay here a little bit more after the recent snowfall in the higher reaches of the Dhauladhars and trans-Himalayan areas. With the rise in temperature, their return journey will again speed up," he said. This year a record number of migratory avians had visited the Pong wetlands.
According to the census of waterfowl species (birds that depend on water bodies for roosting and feeding) conducted by the state forest department from Jan 30 to Feb 1, around 95,000 birds of 89 species were spotted in areas along the Pong reservoir. Divisional forest officer (wildlife) S.K. Guleria said the largest influx was of the bar-headed geese, coot, common pochard, red-crested pochard, great cormorant, gadwall, northern pintail, river tern and the spotbill duck. This year five local migratory species were recorded for the first time. These are the Nordmann's greenshank, the pied avocet, the spoonbill, the jacana and the greater scaup. Guleria said now flocks of the resident birds like the red jungle fowl, large Indian parakeet, Indian cuckoo, bank myna, wood shrike, yellow-eyed babbler, black ibis, paradise flycatcher, crested lark and the crested bunting could be seen here. The Pong wetlands, one of the largest man-made wetlands in northern India, were formed with the construction of a dam across the Beas river in 1975. The dam resulted in the formation of a huge reservoir. The length of the reservoir is 41 km with a maximum width of 19 km. According to "Handbook on Indian Wetland Birds and their Conservation", written by scientists of the Zoological Survey of India, of the 1,230 species found in the Indian subcontinent, nearly 350 are migrants. The most abundant winter migrants to the Indian subcontinent are ducks and geese. Both constitute about 85% of the population. Himachal Pradesh, known as a storehouse of biodiversity, hosts 36% of India's bird species. Of the 1,228 species of birds that have been reported in India, 447 have been recorded in the hill state alone by the Himachal State Council for Science, Technology and Environment in its biodiversity report.

Increases - Computer science enrollment

Though the number of tech jobs are decreasing, computer science programs across the country have recently begun to recover from several years of declining enrollment.
According to Forrester Research, information technology occupations are down 1.2% this year, with 4,100 jobs slashed just this month. Enrollment of computer science courses, though, has increased nationwide by 6.2 percent since 2007, according to an annual survey conducted by the Computing Research Association. John Barr, associate professor and chair of computer science at Ithaca College, said the economy was not an issue in enrollment. He said when he spoke with colleagues at other institutions with computer science programs, they told him students wanted safe jobs. “It’s not the economy that’s affecting us so much, but the whole change in technology,” he said. “As computers become more important, it’s more important for students to understand computer science.” According to Barr, the college had 94 students majoring in computer science during the 2002-03 academic year, but over the past few years the number decreased to 40. This year, there are 45 students enrolled in the major.
Patricia Woodworth, associate professor of computer science, said the college’s computer science enrollment, like that of other schools, was affected by national cycles.
“Computer science is similar to engineering,” she said. “It runs in cycles, and this is not Ithaca College-unique, it’s nationwide.” She said the increase in student enrollment at the college and nationally was partly because people with computer science skills are once again in demand after the industry recovered from the dot-com collapse in 2001. Woodworth said most of her students who graduated last year were able to get jobs. “The job market is still good, and the concern is that there’s not going to be enough technically trained people. And nationally, enrollment seems to be increasing slightly,” she said. Woodworth said not all students were drawn to computer science for well-paying jobs that were at low risk of downsizing.
“Jobs [aren’t] enough,” she said. “You have to really be interested in it. Some people come out of high school being interested in computing, liking it and feeling they’re good at it, which is a good reason for choosing a major.” Andrada Voinitchi, a senior computer science major, said she considered computer science the only thing she saw herself doing as her career.
“There’s always a financial issue, but with computer science ... I was lucky because jobs are well paid,” she said. Barr said the department will continue to participate in college initiatives to increase enrollment and hopes to create new computer science-related majors to connect the discipline with other fields of work. “Computer science is naturally cross-disciplinary, because we basically exist to solve other people’s problems,” Barr said. “We’re looking at different ways, programs, minors, whatever we can get that might play on that interdisciplinary feature of computer science.” Woodworth said courses on subjects like artificial intelligence and advanced networking had recently been taught experimentally but not officially added as courses.
“We’re always looking at the curriculum to make sure it’s current, because computing fields change exceedingly rapidly,” she said. “It’s difficult to change the same course exactly the same way twice in a row.” Jared Vinci, a sophomore computer science major, said he was not certain whether he would pursue a career in computer science, but said he knew the skills he learned would help him in any job. “Even if I can’t get a job programming, the fact that I can program will be an asset wherever I go,” he said. Voinitchi said computer skills are important for everyday life. Barr said computer skills are important for everyone, and suggested that high school students take courses in computer science. “You can’t escape computers,” he said. “Regardless of where you go or what you do, they’re going to follow you. You have to understand, and you might as well be prepared for it.”

After Apple reportedly placing large order NAND flash supply to tighten

Apple has reportedly placed orders for 100 million 8Gb NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics, which is likely to cause a supply shortage, according to sources at downstream suppliers. Nokia and Sony recently also began building their NAND flash inventories, further tightening supply, the sources added. As Toshiba, Hynix Semiconductor, Intel and Micron Technology have allocated less chip supplies to the Asia market since early April, memory module makers are striving to grab more NAND flash chips to meet substantial volumes of short lead-time orders from system makers, the sources indicated. Supply is expected to remain tight until at least the end of May, the sources said. Spot prices for mainstream MLC NAND flash trended upward during the week of March 27-April 2, as a result of tightening supplies, data gathered by inSpectrum show. According to DRAMeXchange, contract prices for MLC NAND flash chips have increased by up to 16% for the first half of April, as a result of shipment adjustments by chip suppliers. Major NAND flash chipmakers tend to allocate more shipments to system makers, and do not plan to increase their production for the second quarter in order to maintain price stability, said the market research firm.

Auto industry inches grew on stimulus package as the biggest booster

Amid the economic crisis, the Indian auto industry managed to stay positive as the market grew 0.7% to 97.2 lakh units in FY09 with the government’s stimulus package coming as the biggest booster. Auto companies are looking at a flat growth in the first few months of the current fiscal with good numbers coming from passenger vehicle and two-wheelers, but commercial vehicles are likely to play spoilsport. After six years of robust growth, car sales grew marginally last fiscal against 12% (12.03 lakh units) in the previous fiscal. Cars are expected to grow 5% in the current fiscal on the back of robust demand for the world’s cheapest car Nano, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has predicted. Analyst tracking the sector said that subdued demand will remain a challenge for the automobile industry in the next few months. “The worst for the automobile industry may be over, but concerns are still there. The growth has come back due to the government’s initiatives. Easy vehicle financing and improvement in consumer sentiments could drive moderate single digit growth in FY10,” Sachin Mathur, head, CRISIL Research, said. In FY09, total passenger vehicle sales, including SUVs and utility vehicles
, posted flat a growth of 0.1% (15.51 lakh units) with multi-utility vehicles, such as Maruti Versa, Omni and Tata Motors’ ACE Magic, growing 6% (106,607 units).
Major carmakers, such as Maruti Suzuki, grew 2% to 7.22 lakh cars and Hyundai Motor India gained 13% to 2.44 lakh units. However, six of the13 car makers, led by Renault SA, Ford Motors, Honda Siel Cars and General Motors reported lower sales in the last fiscal due to the slowdown. According to SIAM, the domestic auto industry’s growth in this fiscal could be subdued, unless the government notifies fresh stimulus package to create demand.
The government had cut excise duty by 4% on all vehicles and reduced excise duty to 8% from 10% on commercial vehicles and auto parts. “Even as the economy cooled and the credit crunch dampened demand, a series of government initiatives helped the auto industry stay in the positive zone. Top concerns are liquidity, working capital finance and high interest rates,” SIAM director general Dilip Chenoy said.

A Fair Test For The MiG-29 - Warplanes

India is testing its MiG-29 fleet for structural flaws, after Russia grounded all 300 of its own, and found 90 of them had serious corrosion problems. Last year, the Indian air force sent the first six of its 78 MiG29 fighters to Russia for a major upgrade. This will cost about ten million dollars per aircraft, and extend their service life from the current 25 years, to 40 years. Thus India is planning on keeping its MiG-29s around until the 2030s. But that plan may be aborted if major corrosion problems are discovered. The MiG-29 entered Russian service in 1983, as the answer to the American F-16. Some 1,600 MiG-29s have been produced so far, with about 900 of them exported. India received its first MiG-29s in 1986, with deliveries continuing into the 1990s. The 22 ton aircraft is roughly comparable to the F-16, but it depends a lot on which version of either aircraft you are talking about. Russia is making a lot of money upgrading MiG-29s. Not just adding new electronics, but also making the airframe more robust. The MiG-29 was originally rated at 2,500 total flight hours. At that time (early 80s), Russia expected MiG-29s to fly about a hundred or so hours a year. India flew them at nearly twice that rate, and now Russia is offering to spiff up the airframe so that the aircraft can fly up to 4,000 hours, with more life extensions upgrades promised. This won't be easy, as the MiG-29 has a history of unreliability and premature breakdowns (both mechanical and electronic). Compared to Western aircraft, like the F-16, the MiG-29 is available for action about two thirds as much. While extending the life of the MiG-29 into the 2030s is theoretically possible, actually doing so will be real breakthrough in Russian aircraft capabilities.
The Indian upgrade program will equip their MiG-29s to handle long range missiles, like the AMRAAM the U.S. is selling to Pakistan. That means installing a phased array radar. The Mig-29s will also get a modern cockpit, inflight refueling capability and dozens of minor tweaks.
Because India's fighter fleet is aging rapidly, it only has 29 squadrons of fighters (about 24 aircraft each), instead of the 45 squadrons it would like to have. But with modernized fighters like the upgraded MiG-29, quality can, to a point, replace quantity. In fact, with the growing dominance of long range air-to-air missiles, and electronic warfare, the speed and agility of fighters is less important than are the electronics and missiles they carry.
The MiG-29 upgrade program will take three years to complete. This will not solve the MiG-29 engine problem (too much visible smoke), and the Russians have promised that past problems in getting spare parts, will not happen again. All things being equal, the MiG-29 should be the equal of a F-16 or F-15. But in all combat so far, the MiG-29s have had the inferior pilots, and have lost. Indian pilots are probably the best trained, and most experienced, that are flying the MiG-29. If India should go to war in the future, while the MiG-29s are still in service, air force commanders will watch with interest how the aircraft does in the hands of world class pilots. But first it will have to survive its construction defects.

Porsche eyeing - dominate the Indian automobile market

Porsche SE, one of the most well known luxury and sports car manufacturer is all set to spread out its operations in the Indian market. Germany based Porsche, the Stuggart is now developing strategies especially aimed at expanding their presence in the Indian automobile market.
Presently well known Porsche cars such as the Cayenne SUV and other sports cars such as the Cayman, the Boxter and the 911 have to be attained in India via import route. The first thing the company plans to do is increase the number of its dealerships which is currently 11 including Mumbai and Delhi showrooms. Rod Wallace, MD Precision Cars India (the official importer of Porsche) stated that the company is looking forward to expand its presence in the Indian automotive market by attracting more and more Indian consumers to buy Porsche luxury cars. He also said "India has a growing number of people who want to enjoy their success and are not shy of showing so by buying luxury cars." According to Wallace, Porsche has already sold nearly 168 automobiles in 2008 ranging from Rs 50 Lakh to 1 Crore and now the company is aiming to lift these numbers to 200 in 2009. New Porsche outlets should be opened in other cities like Ludhiana, Cochin, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Wallace also clarified that Porsche's interest currently does not lie in increasing sales volumes in India, but rather in increasing their presence and networks here. He is sure that the desired numbers are bound to follow soon.
Porsche's most popular brand, the Cayenne is contributing nearly 70% of its sales to serve the company's purpose on the Indian shores. Porsche is also now planning to bring in a diesel variant of this SUV in India, which was displayed by it at the recent Geneva Motor Show.
Wallace stated that although Cayenne Diesel is mainly intended to focus on the European market, but it was the remarkable demand for this car that it got from India that made them take this decision. However, due to limited production, only 19 units of this SUV shall be rolled out for sale in 2009 in India. Wallace also stated that the company had no plans as of yet to start assembling Porsche cars in India, keeping in mind high import duties. He also affirmed that as Porsche has carved itself a special niche in terms of a car manufacture and maker in Germany, currently they had no plans to start assembling cars in India.

Get the Complete Game Package in Online Games

If you’re quite the avid gaming fan, you’re in for a treat. If before you have to buy a gaming console and all the cartridges and software, now, you don’t have to. And even if you’re more inclined towards board games, you no longer need to buy every board game that you like. How is that so? Well, it’s all thanks to the internet and online gaming sites.

Online gaming sites are websites that are designed to give out games for people to play online. That is the reason for their existence. And so far, these sites have done a very good job at what they’re born to do. You can find fun, entertaining and addicting games on these sites. Aside from that, these sites also have the whole gamut of games for different preferences and genres.

For example, you can play arcade games online. Just like your local arcade center, you have several arcade games to choose from. You have shooting games and fighting games, and the like. And as mentioned, there are also boards games for the board game enthusiast. From traditional board games to new and modern board games, online gaming sites offer a wide range of these. And if you’re into tactics and strategy, there are also strategy war games for you to try and play. And for those who are into sports, you can also find free sports games online. The best thing about all of this is that you usually can find all of these games on a single site. That makes it easier for you to switch from game to game since you don’t need to do a new search for the next game that you want to play. As you can see, you do get the whole gaming package with online gaming sites.

Another neat thing about internet gaming sites is that most of them offer their games for free. No need to spend; no need to buy anything. Just go to their site, choose a game and play away. And you don’t need to get a copy of their game too. Since these are online games, you can access these games anywhere there’s an internet connection. Time is not also an issue since you can visit gaming sites at any time of the day.

With the wide selection of games and easy access to them, online gaming sites are gifts from heaven for gaming fans. Not only do fans get a whole package, they get it for free too.

What Makes Online Games Addicting

Games in general are addicting. You can say that since online games are also games—though in a different format and medium— it’s natural that they should be also become addicting games. But then, there are more to online games than just being “games”. They offer many perks that other games can’t offer.

For one, online games are small in size. That means they are fast to download and play. You don’t have to wait hours (unless you’re using dial-up) for you to play the game. Not only that, you won’t need any special equipment or hardware to play the game. So long as you have a computer and internet connection, you can play online games immediately. Additionally, there’s a wide variety of online games in the internet. You have hundreds of choices for games for different genres and interests. This convenience, variety of choices and easy access are some of the things that make online games so popular.

Next is the graphics and gameplay. Though the graphics might not be as good as the games that you see in consoles such as PlayStation or Xbox games, the graphics and animation of online flash games are quite good for their size. For example, flash arcade games are quite at par with actual arcade games and are not that far behind to console games when it comes to animation. About gameplay, online games have different types for different skill levels. Though the complexity might not reach the level of, say, Medal of Honor, online games still pose quite a challenge. And that keeps online games from being too boring or easy.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of online games is that a lot of them are free. You can play online games without spending anything. Since most sites offer free arcade games, you can play free arcade games without any limits. Whether you play for one minute or one hour, it doesn’t matter. Whether you want to play one game, or you want to play all of them, there’s no limit. And that is an effective incentive to make people want to play more. Since people are given free reign over the numerous games offered online, it’s but natural for people to want to try them all. Even if someone just played one game, the idea that he or she can go back anytime to play the game is a powerful invitation to come back for more.

And so, these are some of the reasons why online games can be so appealing. Easy to access, entertaining and free, online games has a lot to offer that make people play some more.
