Nokia Take-Back Program rolled out in 85 countries

Rotary Bangalore Midtown and Ahimsa, Chennai will plant 10,000 saplings each in Bangalore and Chennai over the next 12 months, as part of Nokia's mobile waste management initiative. The Nokia Take-Back recycling program was launched in India on January 2009 across the cities of Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon and Ludhiana. As a part of the program, Nokia committed to plant a tree sapling for every handset dropped, irrespective of brand or model, into one of its recycling bins. Within the first 45 days of its launch, the collection exceeded 3 tonnes of waste including 10,000 handsets, according to the company. Nokia now intends to extend the campaign to over 15 cities in phases in the next few months. Globally, the Take-Back program has successfully been rolled out in 85 countries.

Japan's Renesas Technology Corp

Japan's Renesas Technology Corp will not cut any of its initial product lineup after its planned merger with rival NEC Electronics (6723.T), its president said, casting doubt on the speed of synergies to be gained from the union. Unlisted Renesas, the world's top maker of microcontollers, will also discuss further fund-raising options and their necessity with parents Hitachi (6501.T) and Mitsubishi Electric (6503.T), Yasushi Akao said on Friday. The merger, which would create the world's third-biggest chipmaker in terms of sales after Intel Corp (INTC.O) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), joins two directly competing companies that use dramatically differing technologies. To benefit from the union and survive any further downturns in the economy, the two must choose from between their many overlapping businesses, analysts say. But that transition is likely to come gradually, as orders rise, boosting Renesas's expected factory usage rate, lessening a sense of urgency to quicken cost cuts. "We would never stop supplying a product for any reason, merger or no merger," Akao said in an interview with Reuters. Renesas' factory usage rate is expected to hit about 60 percent in April-June, up from a little less than 40 percent in the previous quarter, he said. NEC Electronics is owned 65 percent by NEC Corp (6701.T). The two firms aim to sort out details of the merger by the end of July, but executives on both sides have said NEC Electronics will probably absorb Renesas, owned 55 percent by Hitachi and 45 percent by Mitsubishi Electric.

President and Chief Technology Officer, Equity Administration Solutions

The Knowledge Group/The Knowledge Congress Live Webcast Series, the leading producer of regulatory focused webcasts has announced today that Mark Ebersole, President and Chief Technology Officer of Equity Administration Solutions, Inc. will speak at the Knowledge Congress’ upcoming webcast entitled: “FAS 123R & SAB 107: Understanding Stock-Based Compensation Accounting”. This 2-hour event is scheduled for July 7, 2009, Tuesday, at 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT. (For further details of the event and an updated list of panelists, please visit: http://knowledgecongress.org/event_2009_FAS_123R.html) Event Synopsis: Under SFAS 123-R, all companies have been required since 2006 to use fair-value accounting for share-based compensation, such as stock options. The change from previous accounting rules caused many companies to re-examine how they use stock options and other forms of executive compensation. The new standard also has been the subject of commentary and clarifications from the FASB and SEC staff regarding valuation methods, application to different kinds of instruments, and effective dates. With many companies’ shares now worth less than the strike price of options granted to employees and executives as incentive compensation, questions about fair valuations are being raised again. The Knowledge Congress is presenting a distinguished panel of government officials and accounting professionals to discuss accounting for stock-based compensation in today’s uncertain economic climate. The panelists will present their views and reflections on the first three years of reporting under SFAS 123R in a two-hour Live Webcast.

This five-primary-color display comprises Real colors

Sharp Corporation has developed a five-primary-color display that faithfully reproduces the real surface colors that humans are capable of perceiving. A prototype of this display will be exhibited at the international symposium of the Society for Information Display (SID) to be held in San Antonio, Texas, US from May 31 through June 5, 2009. Demand for displays that can render colors in a manner faithful to the appearances of naturally occurring surface colors or designed colors is growing stronger in fields such as industrial design, digital archiving, network-based remote medical care, and electronic commerce. Thus various efforts to satisfy these requests are intensifying, prompting, for example, the development of natural vision technology(1). This five-primary-color display comprises "Multi-Primary-Color Technology" that features special image processing circuitry, in addition to the display panel whose pixel structure is based on five-color filters that add the colors C (cyan) and Y (yellow) to the three colors of R (red), G (green), and B (blue). This combination expands the color gamut (range of reproducible colors) that can be rendered within the color spectrum that humans can discern with the unaided eye, and enables the display to reproduce more than 99% of real surface colors(2). Nearly all real surface colors can be rendered faithfully, including colors that have been difficult to render using conventional LCD monitors - the color of the sea (emerald blue), brass instruments (golden yellow), and roses (crimson red), for example. As adoption of this technology will enable more efficient use of light energy produced by the backlight, this display will also provide greater energy savings. In the future, Sharp will be working to further improve the basic performance of this display and making efforts toward its practical application. Specifications for newly developed five-primary-color LCD.

Particle physics is not just black holes it saves lives

Particle physics saves lives, connects continents through new channels of communication, helps us understand the world around us and inspires tomorrow’s leaders. While the perils associated with particle physics, from Earth-gobbling black holes to Vatican-destroying amounts of antimatter, gain news headlines, it’s easy to overlook the large economic and societal benefits of particle physics research. The technology designed and engineered for paradigm-shifting experiments, such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is some of the most advanced in the world and as particle physics technology moves forward so technology for industries as varied as biotechnology, energy and communications also rapidly progresses. The Institute of Physics (IOP) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) are today, Thursday, 28 May, launching a new report, Particle physics – it matters (pdf download, 2.8 MB) to introduce a wider audience to the economic and societal benefits of particle physics research.Tajinder Panesor, manager, science policy at the Institute of Physics, said, “Many more people are now familiar with the ‘Big Bang’ machine and the hunt for the ‘God’ particle but we feel that there are still some questions around why so much effort is expended on this type of activity. “We want everyone logging onto the Web or going to the hospital for a scan to know that what they’re experiencing has only been made possible through particle physics research.” The new report lays out how particle physics benefits the UK’s economy and its society through healthcare and communication spin-offs and how it provides British industry with world-leading technology, while also helping us address global challenges.

Reducing the Number of Iceland’s Universities(7 to 2)

Foreign specialists warn against cuts in the educational system, especially in the elementary schools. They propose instead a merger of universities, reducing their number from seven to two, one private and one state-run, with emphasis on innovation. The international committee of specialists, which was appointed by the Icelandic government at the beginning of this year, presented its recommendations to the ministers of education and industry and the rectors of Iceland’s universities on Monday, Fréttabladid reports. The committee is chaired by Christoffer Taxell, chancellor at the Aabo Akademi University in Finland. He served as minister of science and technology in Finland during the banking collapse in the early 1990s and has remained a prominent figure behind the Finnish economy.“The Icelandic educational system is fine in many ways but we think discussion and decision-making in policy issues is a little too dispersed,” Taxell said.

Paul Callaghan : today's budget "extremely disappointing" for sci-tech.

One of the nation's highest-profile scientists, Paul Callaghan, of Victoria University, says today's budget was "extremely disappointing" for science and technology. Professor Callaghan, the Alan MacDiarmid Professor of Physical Sciences, said that overall investment in research and development had been increased by a mere $28 million, "even if we ignore the loss of the research and development tax credit and Fast Forward". The National Government ditched a 15c in the dollar research and development tax credit and scrapped Labour's promised Fast Forward Fund aimed at promoting research to help food and farming. Fast Forward would have invested $700 million with matching contributions from industries to create a $2 billion fund over 10 to 15 years. The Government has given an extra $40 million over four years to a "capability fund" for state science companies, $36m over four years to the "blue skies research" Marsden Fund, $32m over four years for health research, $4m over four years for prizes in a Prime Minister's Science competition, and a $16m capital injection in 2011 for a high-speed internet link used by researchers.

The 100 cc segment Bike major to enhance :

The 100 cc segment seems to be the main focus for bike companies who are vying with each other for the segment dominated by market leader Hero Honda. Five out of every 10 two-wheelers sold in India are 100cc bikes. India’s fastest growing two-wheeler company, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), and Bajaj Auto, are both going to make their presence felt in the segment this year, which has 50% share of the 74.37-lakh two wheeler market. HMSI will launch 100cc bikes priced between Rs 40,000 and 45,000 later this year. HMSI president and CEO Shinji Aoyama said: “We are developing a new 100cc bike for India. It is the largest segment, and we want to tap this entry-level market with aggressive prices and innovative product. Our bike will be entirely different from the current breed of 100cc bikes.”The all new100cc segment is currently dominated by Honda’s joint-venture partner Hero Honda, with the Munjals as Indian partner. Half of Hero Honda’s 36 lakh annual sales come from the 100 cc segment. Mr. Aoyama said the company is working on products in a bid to reduce cannibalization with Hero Honda’ 100cc range. He added “We are not looking at high volumes, but want to satisfy customers looking for quality and products, and avoiding any direct ompetition with Hero Honda”. At about the same time Pune-based Bajaj Auto, which exited the 100 cc segment two years ago, is contemplating a re-entry into the segment to ramp up the declining sales. Bajaj had moved away from the 100cc segment and launched an all new 125 cc platform called DT-Si under the XCD brand to attract entry-level customers. The after sales dropped 23% to 12.86 lakh two-wheelers in the last fiscal. Bajaj plans to launch an ultra-low cost bike in the 100 cc range. It has already set up a production base in China, and is looking at importing bikes to India. The company has exported these Chinese made bikes to Nigeria and other African markets and will introduce this bike in India in next few months.

FIRB approved : china sci-tech holding acquisition deal with OZ menerals

Australian miner OZ Minerals Ltd. announced Wednesday that the Australian Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) has approved the plan to sell its Martabe mine to China Sci-Tech Holdings Ltd. (0985.HK) for 211 million U.S. dollars. OZ Minerals boss Barry Cusack said in a statement that FIRB's approval is a key step for the deal's success. He expects the deal to be accomplished before June's closing. The company had intended to sell Martabe gold and silver mine, located at Indonesia Sumatra, to China Minmetals Non-ferrous Metals Co. Ltd. as part of its deal with the latter, but the plan was rejected by the Australian government. OZ Minerals said in mid-April it had signed a formal agreement to sell majority of its assets to China Minmetals for 1.21 billion dollars. The deal recently got the green light from China's National Development and Reform Commission. OZ Minerals announced on April 24 it had proposed selling the mine to Hong Kong-listed China Sci-Tech Holdings. OZ Minerals added that the deal still requires approval from Sci-Tech Holdings' shareholders and some lending banks of OZ Minerals.

Kelly Lamrock : N.B. will need fewer teaching assistants if we have good quality teaching

Cutting librarian and teacher's aid positions in New Brunswick was a difficult choice but with better teaching we won't need as many teacher's assistants, Education Minister Kelly Lamrock said yesterday. "We've got to be innovative," Lamrock said during a whistle-stop visit to the campus of l'Université de Moncton where he made a short speech to teachers attending the SMArts (Science, Math and the Arts) conference. "The minute you say we can't update our teaching models, the minute you say we can't afford to find ways to teach that include everybody, the minute you say we can't renew and learn from our best teachers, then you are simply talking about downsizing the status quo, and we all know that a downsized status quo ain't gonna cut it in the 21st century." During his speech, Lamrock praised teachers who have received support from the Innovative Learning Fund for their unique projects. He said the projects are helping students learn on their own through group projects and new technology in the classroom. "There has been an old theory in education that you teach in a very old-fashioned, lecture-based way and then if students don't follow along, you put a teaching assistant on them." He said today's students will be tomorrow's leaders and the education system should prepare them for life in the real world where they will need self-reliance and innovative thinking to help their generation push society into a new direction.

NGCI : To co-produce 'Helicopter Wars' with Windfall Films

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has announced that the four-part series Helicopter Wars would be their co-production with UK-based Windfall Films. The series, which will premiere on National Geographic Channel in July, recounts the extraordinary personal bravery and dangers of four military missions where helicopter crews risked their own lives to aid others. In each one-hour episode, crew members provide detailed testimony, revealing their fears and anxieties as their skills are tested to the limit. From two pilots who flew an unarmed helicopter to rescue more than 100 men from a battlefield in Vietnam to a US Air Force Reserve crew made up of civilian volunteers who must rush to save a US Navy Seal hiding from a Taliban manhunt, the episodes cover heroic efforts in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and Falklands Wars. Computer-generated images illustrate how the helicopters operated in intense environmental conditions and executed complex flight patterns while demonstrations detail the complications pilots faced in the skies.

Paul's exhibition : Picture is perfect

A PHOTOGRAPHY lecturer has brought a new focus to one of South Tyneside's most idyllic locations. South Shields-born Paul Gibson has a lifetime love of Marsden Bay. He once travelled the world as an electronics engineer with the Royal Air Force. But when he returned home, he would always head to Marsden Bay to spend a period of quiet reflection. Now the lecturer at South Tyneside College has captured the beauty of the area between Camels Island and Pinnacle Rock in a series of images on display at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, in Ocean Road. Mr Gibson, 47, said: "I was brought up in Marsden, and when I was on leave from the Air Force I enjoyed coming back to the bay to relax, no matter what the weather. It's a place of remarkable beauty." The photographs on display capture the area at all times of day and in all elements. Despite a near two-decade passion for photography, it is only in more recent years that he has made it his profession, after completing a degree course at Newcastle University. Mr Gibson added: "I enjoyed the life in the air force, but was never quite fulfilled, now I make my income from photography, although I don't do commissions. The exhibition runs until July 12. The photographs are for sale, and a number of limited edition prints are available.

Car sales positive growth for third month

He passenger car sales in the first month of the new fiscal reported a growth of 4% at the back of increased finance availability and higher demand from rural areas. Following the global financial crisis, the car sales growth in the country had been negative but the sales figure started improving in the last quarter of the previous fiscal. This has been the third month in a row when the car sales have clocked a positive growth. As per the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, auto maker Maruti Suzuki has reported a rise of 8% to 56,221 units in its domestic sales. Similarly Hyundai Motors India and Honda grew by 3.4% to 22,241 units and 16% to 3,565 units respectively during the month of April. The sales figure has marked an improvement due to increased financing by the banks and revival of demand from the rural areas. However Tata Motors did not witness a rise in its sales that remained stagnant at 11,202 units. The company said that its sales remained flat for the period because of restricted lending by banks on some of its models designed for commercial purpose.

Ferrari Joins the IAF

After a lively Spanish Grand Prix weekend in which the controversy on the track was matched by controversy off the track, the post race news is just as hot. In Barcelona, Toyota, Red Bull and Toro Rosso said they would not join in Formula One next season if the rules laid out by the International Automobile Federation concerning the two-tier regulations and budget caps were not altered. Today Ferrari joined in and said that it too would withdraw from Formula One. “The Board of Directors also examined developments related to recent decisions taken by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile during an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on 29 April 2009. Although this meeting was originally called only to examine a disciplinary matter, the decisions taken mean that, for the first time ever in Formula 1, the 2010 season will see the introduction of two different sets of regulations based on arbitrary technical rules and economic parameters. “The Board considers that if this is the regulatory framework for Formula 1 in the future, then the reasons underlying Ferrari’s uninterrupted participation in the World Championship over the last 60 years – the only constructor to have taken part ever since its inception in 1950 – would come to a close.” Of course, this is of little surprise, given that the previous controversy when Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, said that the series could live without Ferrari. But I will withhold judgment on all of this hot news until I see how it shapes up. This is clearly a negotiating ploy on the part of the teams. And that is not to say that they would not be good to their word. But clearly the FIA and the teams will have to meet to discuss this, or if the teams pulled out then Formula One would turn into GP1. And who would care about watching - or more importantly, sponsoring - that?

Satellite Car Radio Service in India

WorldSpace, US based satellite radio company, plans to launch satellite car radio service in India by 2010. Although the company had earlier planned to roll out car radio sets in the country by 2004, absence of a government policy on satellite radio has delayed the launch. M Sebastian, managing director, WorldSpace - India and Middle East, says, "Non-availability of terrestrially augmented satellite radio services in India that enable satellite radio service in automobiles is purely due to regulatory hurdles. If that is cleared, we can roll-out the same for the Indian consumers in the next eight to ten months." The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has prepared a draft Cabinet note for the satellite radio policy, and is consulting other ministries before taking it to the Cabinet once the new government is formed. WorldSpace India is expected to strike partnerships with automobile manufacturers among others to bring in car radio. In countries like Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Bahrain, the company is entering into partnerships for the same. While there's no limit on FDI in satellite radio now due to lack of any regulation, the new policy is expected to cap FDI at 74%. WorldSpace would be given three years to comply with the guidelines. As of now, WorldSpace is keeping all options open including getting a strategic investor, a financial investor or an Indian media entity as the domestic partner. The company also wants to offer subscription based online radio stations to the expat community.

American Le Mans Series believe their racing

Officials of the American Le Mans Series believe their racing ranks among most entertaining and competitive in the world. Shane Beck won't argue. A local motorsports authority who hosts a weekly show on KFNZ-AM radio, Beck says the American Le Mans Series does not take a backseat to any type of racing -- IndyCar, Formula One or NASCAR -- when it comes to fan appeal. "Their cars are the most sophisticated in the world," Beck said, "and their drivers are some of the most talented in a world. In a nutshell, that's what makes one of their races an experience of a lifetime." During an American Le Mans Series race -- like the Utah Grand Prix on Sunday at Miller Motorsports Park -- four classes of cars are on the track at the same time. Two drivers alternate during most races, although three team up for endurance races.
Unlike most racing series, Le Mans races are decided by the amount of distance covered in a fixed amount of time. NASCAR, by contrast, is a race to see who can cover a distance in the least amount of time. The standard time for an ALMS race is two hours and 45 minutes. The car leading at that point is the winner. "These are the most unbelievable cars on the planet," said John Gardner of Miller Motorsports Park. "It's very cool stuff -- wall-to-wall action. Like Disneyland." All indicators point to increasing interest in the ALMS. Last year, about 800,000 fans attended 10 races -- a 6-percent increase from 2007. So far this year, television ratings are up 3 percent for races in Sebring, Fla., St. Petersburg, Fla., and Long Beach, Calif.

power shortages will soon become known as the solar city

The city, which has had its share of power shortages will soon become known as the solar city if all things go as planned, a top energy department official told reporters on Tuesday. In an attempt to shift the focus from conventional sources of energy to non- conventional sources of energy, the Energy Department has planned to make one lakh roof- tops solar roof-tops, which will harness the sun’s energy. As per the plan, solar panels, which are capable of converting the sun’s energy into electricity, will be installed on top of about 1 lakh houses. “The preliminary discussions are on,” said Principal Secretary Energy, K Jairaj on Tuesday. “This is a massive first-of-itskind initiative in the country,” he added. The Department of Energy has asked the Centre for Study of Science Technology and Policy (CSTEP) to prepare a detailed report to study the feasibility of such a project. “The cost would be around Rs 1 lakh per unit of power generated,” said Jairaj. “However, it is just a preliminary estimate which may change,” he added. This technology has been used in countries like Germany. “The department is aggressively pursuing solar energy,” said Jairaj. The Energy Department has also tabled a renewable energy policy which will focus on development of renewable energy. “This is being done in order to bring about a radical change in the state’s power sector,” he added. “There are about 11 lakh families in the city. If all of them keep a solar water heater, the peak load will decrease by about 300 MW easily,” he said. The state can bear a peak load of 6,137 MW presently.
