Benefit Habitat for Humanity

A concert to benefit Habitat for Humanity will be held today at Weber State University. JakeFest, now in its fifth year, is an annual community concert held in memory of Jacob Cody Pratt, a Farmington 15-year-old who was killed in an automobile accident in 2005. "He played the guitar, and he played it really well. He was a great musician and an inspiration to all who knew him," said Chris Lyons, a friend of Pratt's who helped to organize the event. "We do this for Jake every single year. There's nothing else we can do but remember him in the best possible way we can, and what better way is there to do that than hold a concert in his honor and raise money for charity?" The concert will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at WSU's Shepherd Union Building ballroom. Tickets for the event are $10 at the door. All of the bands playing are local, Lyons said, and include styles ranging from hard rock to acoustic to punk and hardcore metal. Some of the bands scheduled to play include Covendetta, Sirens, Avondale, Emily Rose and Jones/Definition/UnionRap Jack. "We wanted to keep this as local as possible and show people how much talent there is here in Utah," Lyons said. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Weber and Davis counties. For more information on the bands and when they are scheduled to perform, go to www.myspace.com/jakefestival.

Local automobile dealers in Red Hot

Local automobile dealers can breathe at least a temporary sigh of relief after an incentive program that nearly burned through all of its funding in the first week is on track to receive more money. The federal Cash for Clunkers program is attracting more customers at a time when dealers could use all the help they can get. "Business has been red hot," said Byron Hansen, owner of Hansen Motor Co., a General Motors dealer in Brigham City. "There's a lot of paperwork involved, but it's been a major stimulator for sales." Officially known as CARS, the Car Allowance Rebate System, the $1 billion government program aimed at getting fuel-guzzling cars and trucks off the road took effect July 24. It provides consumers a rebate of $3,500 or $4,500 on the purchase of a more fuel-efficient car or truck if they trade in a vehicle with a combined city/highway mileage of 18 miles per gallon or less. The program was initially launched with $1 billion in federal funding but the U.S. House voted Friday to allocate another $2 billion to bolster the program after realizing how popular it is. By some estimates, the first $1 billion was called for within five days. There was some uncertainty about the status of the program late Thursday, when Congress considered suspending the program to make sure it had enough funding to meet all the requests. That caused a sense of urgency among customers who were on the fence about buying a new car, said Skyler Cutrubus, general manager of Freeway Cadillac Mazda in Riverdale. While the program has been good for sales, Cutrubus said questions about adequate funding have caused uncertainty among dealers.

Citroen Swings to Loss

PSA Peugeot-Citroen said Wednesday it swung to a loss in the first half of 2009 due to shrinking vehicle sales and said it expected to see a recovery in the European automobile market only toward the end of 2010. The company reported a first-half net loss of €962 million ($1.36 billion) compared to a net profit of €733 million a year earlier. The loss was smaller than a consensus forecast of a €1.05 billion loss from seven analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. However, Peugeot's first-half operating loss of €1.33 billion, compared to a profit of €1.03 billion in the first half of 2008, was above the consensus forecast of a €839.5 million loss. Revenue fell by 22% to €23.50 billion, reflecting the 20% drop in sales of the company's vehicles. Like other volume car makers, Peugeot-Citroen has been squeezed by the plunge in global automobile sales due to recession, as well as an unprecedented rapid shift in customer preference to smaller, less polluting cars. Peugeot said that with European automotive sales likely to contract by 7% in the second half of this year, it expected to post an operating loss of between €1 billion and €2 billion for 2009. In contrast to the disappointing results and gloomy outlook, Peugeot surprised market participants by announcing it had achieved a positive free cash flow of €467 million in the first half due to a 31% drop in its inventory of unsold cars. Shares rose 3.5% in early trading.

Japanese automakers look to expansion

Japan's three big carmakers all reported falls in production for the month of June due to the global financial crisis which sapped demand overseas. Toyota Motor Corp.'s domestic year-on-year output declined by 31.2 percent in June. In the same period Nissan Motor Corp. dropped by 34.2 percent, while Honda Motor Corp. by 30.6 percent. Statistics have shown exports for all of Japan's automakers dropped by more than 50 percent in the past two fiscal quarters. Meanwhile, the sales of Toyota, the world's largest carmaker, dropped by 26 percent for the January-June period to around 3,564,000 units. Both Toyota Motor and Nissan Motor unveiled updated strategies to secure footholds on future automobile markets amid record sales dips in production, by focusing on expansion into China and designing more environmentally friendly automobiles. Toyota is in discussion with Mazda Motor about sharing hybrid technology that may boost Toyota's position as the industry standard for eco-cars. Ford Motors and Nissan have already have arrangements with Toyota to employ the company's hybrid-car technology. Toyota's president, Akio Toyoda, said the company will try to bolster sales in developing markets such as China, while cutting loses in America with initiatives including closing a factory in California.

Bike phone charger

Two Kenyan university students have invented a device that allows bicycle riders to charge their mobile phones. Jeremiah Murimi, 24, and Pascal Katana, 22, said they wanted their dynamo-powered "smart charger" to help people without electricity in rural areas. "We both come from villages and we know the problems," Mr Murimi told the BBC. People have to travel great distances to shops where they are charged $2 a time to power their phone, usually from a car battery or solar panel. "The device is so small you can put it in your pocket with your phone while you are on your bike," said Mr Murimi. It is estimated that some 17.5 million people out of Kenya's 38.5 million population own a mobile handset - up from 200,000 in 2000. The two electrical engineering students have been working on the invention, which they are selling for 350 Kenyan shillings ($4.50) each, over the last few months during their university break. In Kenya, bicycles are sold with a dynamo to be attached to the back wheel to power the lights. The dynamo lead can be switched to plug into the charger instead, they explained. The BBC's Ruth Nesoba went to Nairobi University campus to see the young men demonstrate their handiwork. Jumping on a bike, Mr Katana explained it takes an hour of pedalling to fully charge a phone, about the same time it would if it were plugged into the mains electricity. Our reporter says after a short ride, the phone's battery display indicated that it was charging.

Global car breakdown service in India

Stranded on the road due to a vehicle breakdown and no help around? Not any more. Europ Assistance, an international firm in the field of professional automotive assistance services, has entered India. "Initially, the service will be available automatically to the 150,000 life members of the Western Indian Automobile Association (WIAA) in Mumbai and then we plan to introduce more such services in India," Europ Assistance (India) Managing Director Anil Vinayak told IANS. Europ Assistance, part of the Fortune 500 Generali Group, will provide the service through the WIAA which would collect the fees from its life members. "Annual production of passenger vehicles in India has gone up by over a million in the past five years, but the servicing and assistance infrastructure lag behind. With factors like poor road conditions and weather regularly leading to car breakdowns, professional automotive assistance promises a huge potential in India," Vinayak explained. A company spokesman said that this would effectively mean getting qualified, professional help to tackle any emergency anywhere in the country, round-the-clock, through a dedicated number. "This means that you do not entrust your vehicle to unprofessional or semi-qualified roadside garage operators who may charge nominally, but siphon off some spare parts," the spokesman said. The services offered would include minor spot repairs, towing for major breakdown or accidents, calling medical help, emergency fuel delivery and related issues.

Predicted for 2010 Auto Sales Down

Timmy Villaver just got a good deal on a new truck. "I just wanted to buy," he explained. The struggling auto industry could use more customers like him right now. According to the Hawaii Auto Dealers Association, Hawaii car sales dropped 31.5% the first six months of this year compared to the same time last year. That's about 7500 fewer vehicles sold. "This past month, we thought there was some level of consistency," said Brad Nicolai of JN Group, "then you'll hit a period of ten days where business is extremely light." Nicolai says part of it has to do with consumer confidence that's been shattered. When times are tough, big ticket items like cars are placed lower on the priority list. Business reporter Howard Dicus says people are holding onto their cars longer because of the recession. "A car that's still running, we'll decide we don't like the looks anymore, or it's all paid off and we'll get a new one, but in recession, a lot of people haven't been doing that," Dicus said, "theyv'e been continuing to drive their older cars because they still run." But there is some good news. Auto industry experts predict a nearly 13% rise in sales next year. "It's just a natural attrition of getting the older cars and getting people to replace because some people will just have to get new cars at some point," said Stan Masamitsu, president of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association. To survive, dealers are continuing to offer deep discounts, rebates and special lease rates. And shoppers have more negotiating power than ever before. That's good news for Kjell Newall. He desperately needs to replace his clunker. "It only goes up to 25 miles an hour," he laughed, "It doesn't want to shift."

The GJM leadership has informed

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), spearheading an agitation for a separate Gorkhaland state, is now considering withdrawal of the indefinite shutdown it has called in the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal ahead of the tripartite meeting on the issue next month. "We're discussing within our party the issue of withdrawing the indefinite shutdown in the hills. We've already withdrawn the blockade from the National Highway (NH)-31A and all tea gardens are already kept out of the purview of the strike," said GJM general secretary Roshan Giri. The central and state governments will have a meeting with the pro-Gorkhaland parties Aug 11. "We want the discussion to be focussed on our Gorkhaland demand," he said. The GJM called an indefinite shutdown from July 13 in support of its demand. The shutdown has paralysed life in Darjeeling's three hill sub-divisions - Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong. West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said the state government had requested the GJM leadership to withdraw their strike. "The GJM leadership has informed us that they are now considering withdrawing the shutdown in the hills. They will let us know about their decision in a day or two," Chakraborty said.

NAND Supply Deal Toshiba with Apple Entered

* Apple says made $500 mln prepayment to Toshiba in July
* Apple COO says NAND market beginning to stabilise
* Says DRAM, large-size LCD markets constrained
* Toshiba mum on impact on profits
TOKYO, July 22 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has entered into a long-term supply agreement with Toshiba Corp (6502.T) for NAND-type flash chips in a sign that the chip market could be on the road to recovery. Apple made a $500 million prepayment to the loss-making Japanese chipmaker at the beginning of July, a transcript of Apple's conference call with analysts on its consensus-beating results on Tuesday showed. Apple's profit margin and sales of its iPhones and Macs in the April-June quarter beat analysts' expectations [ID:nLM82627], and the firm is looking to lock in component supplies and prices. "The market for DRAM and the market for large-size LCDs has shifted to a constrained environment, and the pricing has moved accordingly," Apple COO Tim Cook told analysts. "The NAND market has now begun to stabilise and we expect it to move towards a supply/demand balance." In January, Apple entered into a five-year agreement with South Korea's LG Display (034220.KS) for LCD panels in a deal that included an upfront payment by Apple of $500 million. The deal with Toshiba is a boon for the world's No.2 maker of NAND as it grapples with mounting losses and cutthroat price competition against bigger rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) of South Korea. Weak demand and relentless chip price falls have torn into Toshiba's capital, forcing it to raise $5 billion earlier this year. The industrial electronics group declined to comment on the time span of its agreement with Apple and whether or not the deal would boost its earnings. The $500 million pre-payment is equivalent to about a quarter of a year's worth of Apple's allowance for NAND -- used in iPhones and iPods -- sources said. Falls in the prices of components, such as hard drives and optical drives have also slowed, Cook said. Shares of Toshiba rose 5 percent, closing at 378 yen, outperforming a 0.3 percent rise in Tokyo's electrical machinery subindex .IELEC.T. (Reporting by Mayumi Negishi; Editing by Joseph Radford)

Quarterly Net Profit in LG Electronics

LG Electronics Inc., (SEO:066570) has posted a record-high quarterly net profit, this is thanks to healthy sales of flat-screen TVs and cell phones. This was a great result for the electronics giant, as gains were much higher than were forecast. A number of analysts have said that the outlook for LG is looking good for the second half, the momentum will keep moving forward with the sale of new handsets and liquid-crystal-display televisions.

With the advancement of technology, people have found many ways of using it in many things. Technology is mostly used to make the lives of the people easier. That is why playing on casinos became a lot more easier and convenient, thanks to the help of technology.

When casino was introduced to people, it did not take a long time for people to accept and patronize this gambling house. Thus, it became a favorite to a large quantity of people. Nowadays, playing on casinos provide gamblers with entertainment and fun, plus an additional source of money. Most of the time, these gamblers go home with their pockets empty, or at least they have enough money to go home through a bus. But this does not stop them from coming back and play more on their favorite casino games.

Casinos provide gamblers with many varieties of casino game. These gambling houses are widespread throughout the world, but most of the time, the gamblers have to travel distances ranging from a block through a hundred miles just to play casino. But now, with the help of the Internet, the gamblers have another venue to practice, play, or compete with other players, through the online, virtual, or Internet casino games offered by casino websites. They just have to sit on their favorite chairs and enjoy their casino games while staying at home.

Games at casinos online are categorized into three types based on their interface. The first are web-based online casino games which do not need to be downloaded on your computer and can be played on your browsers directly, but may require some browser plugins. Download-based online casinos are games which can be downloaded for free or with software payment in order to play offline. Lastly, live-based casino games are games where you can play with other gamers online.

The most famous casino games are also categorized into games of luck, games of skill, and combination of both luck and skill. Games of luck includes those games whose winning criteria are based on random means. These include the roulette wheel, slot machines, bingo, keno. Games of skill are those which require skills in order to win the game. These includes blackjack, poker, and texas holdem poker. The games which includes combination of both luck and skills are craps and baccarat.

Online casino games uses technologies and advanced graphics which provides the players with the same ambiance and excitement they experience in the brick and mortar casino games.

The Roulette Wheel is characterized by a wheel with sections containing two or more different colors and numbers. A player can choose to place his bets on either one or more numbers, the color red or black, or whether the number is odd or even. The wheel is spun in one direction and a small ball is rolled opposite of the direction of the spin. When the wheel stops, the winning number and colored combination is determined by the wheel section where the ball lands. Roulette is the French word for "wheel". Online roulette wheel games use a simulated "wheel" which "spins" virtually and produces random results. Betting rules of its real-life counterpart are also applied in these games.

The Slot Machine is the simplest of all casino games. It is characterized by a machine with a mechanism such as a button or a lever to spin the reels with different symbols. The prize is based on the patterns of the symbols when the reels stopped spinning. Older versions of slots had a lever on one side of the machine and gained the reputation of "one-armed bandits", because slot machines have the ability to make a player penniless. Online slot machine games provide players with an interface with virtual "reels" which will spin when a button is clicked or a simulated lever is "pulled-down" and can also produce random patterns of images.

Bingo is a game of chance where the player is given one or more 5x5-matrices which contains randomly selected numbers. The matrices are available as a printed paper or card stock on land-based casinos and as an electronically represented number matrices available to the computer screen. These matrices are referred to as "Bingo cards", or just "cards". Each of the five columns have 5 numbers sorted vertically with the lowest value on the top and the highest value on the bottom. The first column (labeled "B") has the values ranging from 1-15. The second column (labeled "I") has values ranging from 16-30. The third column (labeled "N") has values ranging from 31-45. The fourth column (labeled "G") has values ranging from 46-60. And the last column (labeled "O") has values ranging from 61-75. The first player to form a certain pattern wins a prize based on the pattern he formed.

Keno is a game which is similar to a lottery game and bingo. The player will choose up to 20 numbers, or spots, on their keno tickets which contains numbers from 1 to 80. 20 numbers are drawn randomly, and if a drawn number matches any spot the player had selected, it is called a "hit". The prize is based on the number hits the player obtained. This game is mostly used for fund raising and charities. Most online keno games use an interface with a matrix containing numbers from 1 to 80 where they can click their selected spots, or auto-select their numbers randomly. The system will then "draw" 20 numbers randomly, and the winning numbers are also displayed on the matrix. If there is a "hit", it is often emphasized and highlighted. The number of hits the player obtained and the payouts are also displayed on either sides of the matrix.

Blackjack is one of the most commonly played casino banking game in the world. This is played by one to seven players against a banker from behaind a kidney-shaped table. The main objective is to get a higher card total than the dealer without going over 21. The player can "hit" or take another card just to get a hand close to 21. Online blackjack games usually use an iterface which resembles blackjack tables at land-based casinos. This is to provide players the same ambiance as the real-life blackjack.

Poker is characterized by betting rules and hand rankings. It is started with a primary bet, which will go to the left. Each of the players must match the previous one, otherwise, he will fold and lose all the bets he made and the further bets of other players. The last player whose bet are not matched will collect the pot, no need to present his cards, and the next round will begin. If more than one player remains at the end of a betting round, those players will present the cards in their hand and evaluate the hand rankings. The player with the best hand wins. Most online poker games have an interface with an oval table and up to 10 seats around where the virtual "players" (real people also playing online or computer players for practice) are "sitting" and playing the game.

Texas Holdem Poker Set is a famous variant of poker. The game starts with the players holding two cards each. The dealer will place up to three cards, face up. In each of the cards being placed, the players have the option to match the previous bet or to fold. The hand ranking of each player depends on the two cards they have plus the three face-up cards placed by the dealer. The winner is the player with the best hand.

Baccarat is usually characterized by two or more punters playing against the banker. The winner is the player who has two or three cards with the last digit of the sum of the values on these cards is nearest to nine. Two cards are first given, but the players have the option whether to ask for another or not. Both luck and strategy is required in order to win. The interface used by most online baccarat games contains a semi-circular table, similar to land-based baccarat, where the players can play agains the virtual "banker" at the center.

Craps is a dice game played by one or more players competing against each other or against the bank. When the dice are rolled, the value on the top-facing side of the two dice are added, which is called the dice outcome. If the result of the first throw, called the come-out roll, is 7 or 11, the dice shooter wins. A come-out roll which results 2, 3, or 12 makes the shooter lose, but he still rolls the dice. When any number aside from the mentioned values is the result of the first throw, then that number must be repeated in order to win. If a 7 is thrown after that number, then the shooter loses the bet. Online craps games use a simulated craps table similar to real-life craps where the players can place their bets.

Whether online or not, casino games still holds a high popularity and demand. The major thing that attracts the gamblers to play casino games is the excitement that they give and the huge amount of bonuses and prizes one can get from playing their favorite casino games.

Electronics Help Obese Teens

‘It knows if you’ve been bad or good…’, familiar words from a Christmas song, are being sung at the University of Southern California to the tune of a million dollars, thanks to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Washington Post, researchers are trying to convert those words into a series of text messages that will motivate obese teens to get active and lose weight using an accelerometer, a heart rate monitor, GPS device and a sensor that gauges electrical conductivity of skin. Data are relayed to a phone, and then transmitted to a server. If the sensors conclude that you’ve been sedentary too long, you get the message. The device can also tell if you’re running, walking or engaged in other physical activity. The plan is to strap the belts on about two dozen obese high school kids by the year’s end--both to track and nag the subjects for a week. Hoping the instrument should become so attuned to the wearer that researchers call it the KNOWME Network, urging teens to become healthier. Will it work? Stay tuned….

China's largest indigenous car maker, has resumed

Chery Automobile Co, China's largest indigenous car maker, has resumed preparations for an A-share initial public offering as the country's securities regulator lifted its nearly 10-month ban on domestic IPOs due to a recovery in the country's stock market.Chery had applied for a domestic listing in June 2008 but the application was shelved amid a market slump as the global financial crisis struck home, the newspaper said, citing Chery's spokesman Jin Yibo. Chery has resumed its preparations to go public and is conducting due diligence, Jin was quoted as saying. Jin did not provide Chery's financial details but said the automaker was qualified for a public listing helped largely by a firming auto market. No timetable or details about the size of the IPO were given. Chery executives could not be immediately reached for comment. China lifted its ban on domestic IPOs last month due to a strong rebound in the stock market amid signs of economic recovery. Meanwhile, Jin also confirmed that Chery and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co, a van maker also based in the eastern province of Anhui, had started working to consolidate their assets under the guidance of the local government. China has been urging a major restructuring of its fragmented auto sector. The government aims to cut the number of major auto groups to 10 or fewer from 14, and wants two or three mega-producers eventually.

North Carolina's auto dealers continue Pres Case

As North Carolina's auto dealers continue to navigate a new world of government bailouts and corporate bankruptcies, the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association is lobbying for state and federal efforts to protect dealer rights. At the heart of the association's effort are laws that would normally protect dealers against the sudden closure of a manufacturer. However, many laws were invalidated by the corporate bankruptcy filings of General Motors and Chrysler. Dealers say the companies, particularly Chrysler, used the temporary break from the usual rules as an opportunity to clean house. And they are still seeking answers about how Chrysler determined which dealers would be shut down. City Motors in Greensboro was one of 14 N.C. dealers that lost its Chrysler dealership in June. The Charlotte area lost three. “Nobody knows to this day why they weren't picked up by the new company,” said Mike Cranford, general manager of City Motors. In South Carolina, David McKinney, former owner of Lancaster Dodge Chrysler Jeep, said he and other former S.C. Chrysler dealers are pressing the issue because it's one of basic fairness. Everyone else involved in GM's and Chrysler's bankruptcy cases – from union workers to bond holders to bankruptcy lawyers – got paid, while franchises like his received nothing, he said. “The way the dealers are looking at it, it's like eminent domain without compensation,” he said. McKinney changed his company's name to Lancaster DCJ and still maintains a service shop. But losing the tie to Chrysler was “like a knockout punch,” he says. There is no public list of General Motors' dealerships that are closing, but Robert Glaser, president of the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association, said he guesses the state will lose about 35 of its 200 GM franchises.

World's Oldest Man at 113 Henry Allingham

It seems that it wasn't too long ago when you could still track down an occasional World War One veteran at a Veteran's Day or Memorial Day observation. I have had the pleasure more than once, and I am sorry to know that the last known man to fight in the Great War, Henry Allingham, has finally left this mortal world at the age of 113. Peter Hankoff, who has spent years looking at the world through the eyes of a documentarian's dirty lens, has a few thoughts on this recent loss which will undoubtedly affect both historians and documentarians. His National Geographic program Scrapbooks from Hell - The Auschwitz Albums sent him to history's most infamous concentration camp. Other documentaries have taken Peter to Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, the site of the San Francisco earthquake and other infamous places throughout the world. While en route to France to shoot on location for an upcoming TV program, Peter take a moment to write his thoughts about Henry Allingham, a WWI veteran and the world's oldest man, at 113. Freedom at 113 "Henry Allingham, the world's oldest man, died today after 113 years on the planet. While that may not seem like a lot of time in a geological or historical sense, from a cultural perspective, it's an eternity. Most of what we take for granted was invented in his lifetime - automobiles, planes, rockets, computers, radio, television, modern medicine, digital anything. But what ties him even deeper to history is that he was also the world's oldest veteran." "As a member of the Royal Air Force, he fought for Britain in World War One. Millions died in the war to end all wars and Henry Allingham was a reminder of why we fight and live and remember the sacrifice in order to continue building a world where men can live free to 113." Peter Hankoff is an award-winning documentary director/producer/writer who lives in Los Angeles.

The Urge to Win on Slot Machines

Have you ever played a casino game? Ever wonder why many gamblers still love these games despite of losing too much very often? Why is gambling considered as an entertainment? There are too many questions that are pointing to the attitudes of the gamblers. However, despite being questioned so much, they still love the games that can even lead them down to bankruptcy.

Gambling is now considered as an entertainment. Whether it is classic, traditional casinos, or gambling online, it is undeniable that there is an increasing number of people who considers gambling as a past-time and entertainment. Why is it so? Gambling gives them so much excitement because they do not know what will be the outcome of certain games they are playing. They are always trying to test their strategies, luck, and fighting spirit in these games. Thus, they always want to know if they will be lucky today or this week and if they will be hitting some jackpots and win some card games on the casino.

There are many different kinds of casino games. One of the most popular is the slot machine, or slot for short. This machine really attracts so many gamblers and gamers seeking entertainment and additional income. Slots are machines that are operated by a button, or a lever in older versions, which will spin three or more reels with different printed symbols. Most of these machines include a currency detector which scans and validates the coin or money inserted to play. When the machine stops spinning, the prize which a gambler can get from the machine is based on the patterns of symbols visible on the front of the machine.

Slot machines have the reputation of being the so-called "one-armed bandits". Why is it so? This is because the old versions of slots had a lever on one side which would spin the reels when pulled. But modern technology has redesigned slot machines in many variations, without sticking much on the one-armed-theme machine. Some have a button to be pushed in order for the machine to generate results. Even online slots have different designs. Whatever the design is, the major technology used in slot machines, nowadays, is the random number generator, particularly on online casino games and online slots. Therefore, it is beyond the player's control on what will be the outcome. Thus, everything depends on luck after the player "pulls that lever".

Most of the time, the machine seldom gives a winning combo. And if it hits a combo, the payout is still less than the total amount of coins the player has inserted in the coin slot. This results into the player leaving home with nothing, because he will eventually bet whatever he had left in his pocket in order to take back what he had lost in the machine. Thus, he is completely "robbed" by that "one-armed bandit". They really push their luck on these machines and hope that they would really go home with a bag full of coins.

Whether online or offline, gambling is like a magnet that draws the "metallic" desire of the gamblers to win more money. Once you get acquainted with it, it is not easy to break free from these "magnetic" casino games. It is advisable that the players must set a maximum amount to bet on the casino games and leave some amounts in their pockets so that not all of their already "metallic" coins and money will be drawn and completely taken away from them by the magnetic powers of these casino games.

Why is it that they still love gambling and playing casino games? Gamblers naturally have high winning spirits that keep them going on and on after losing so much on casino games that are based on luck. If this winning spirit and the luck of the player goes along with each other, then it is really a jackpot.

Grand Vitara From Maruti Suzki.

Maruti Suzuki have given the Grand Vitara a makeover and a brand new engine as well. The Grand Vitara was a pretty good car but never really caught on in the Indian market, despite having no major flaws and decent international sales figures. Perhaps it was the compact dimensions or the Rs 15 lakh price tag but with Swift parts inside. Hopefully, the new Grand Vitara will take things up a little bit. The facelift and the new front-end treatment make it a wee bit smarter than the previous edition. Another issue with the earlier version was the lack of oomph. Now the new engine should sort things out. It is a 2.4-litre Variable Valve Timing (VVT) equipped mill producing 163.5 bhp @ 6000 rpm and a torque figure of 22.8 kgm @ 4000 rpm, which should be adequate when things get muddy. Especially considering it comes with permanent 4-mode, 4-wheel drive. Other gizmos include a Multi Information Display (MID) providing information such as fuel consumption, cruising range and average speed. Maruti Suzuki also claim lower Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) levels owing to the new powerplant and tweaks. The new Vitara will be available throughout the country immediately, according to Maruti Suzuki, with prices starting at Rs.16.67 lakh for the manual transmission Vitara and Rs.17.97 lakh (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi) for the auto version. The update looks promising. So keep checking back for a road test, BSM-style!

New Technology feed the world :

My brother called me to remind me our dad would have been 100 years old this past Canada Day. Imagine that -- a century old. Like most people, Earnest Arthur Roberts didn't make it to that milestone, by a long shot. And, realistically, I don't plan to either. But should some medical miracle happen and I'm rereading this particular column in 2059, I know one thing for sure -- I'll be feasting on crow. That's because this column is dedicated to the top technological developments in agriculture likely to emerge in the next 50 years. Given how technology advances in ways no one can foresee, I can't imagine being right. However, who -- including me -- will remember if I'm wrong? So here goes. In many ways, futuristic technology has already arrived. Robot harvesters, satellite-housed disease sensors for crops, and remote internal temperature monitors for livestock aren't exactly commonplace, but they're here. Plus, we have the ability to make what was once called space-age food -- cloned meat, for example, and nutraceutical crops loaded with health-related traits. It's almost Orwellian. Some people consider this scenario frightening, and that could spell trouble for agriculture. Scarce venture capital, uptight regulations and the fear of science-based advancement thwart innovation more than anything else. Nonetheless, technology will evolve. It must. Here's why. Effective technologies leading into the middle of this century will be needed to continue feeding the soaring population and providing food security. We won't be able to ignore the unfortunate fact that one out of every six people in the world is hungry. Last month, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization predicted the world's hungry will reach 1.02 billion this year, mostly in Africa, with a population marching toward eight billion by 2030.

The Business Case for Coaching -- By Wendy Capland, CEO, Vision Quest Consulting

The higher up the organizational ladder an executive climbs, the less he/she can depend on technical skills, and the more he/she must have command of effective interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.

Organizations spend large sums of money to hire coaches for top executives in an effort to improve these abilities. Are coaching programs effective in improving bottom line performance for organizations?

Research by the Center for Creative Leadership has found that the primary causes of derailment in executives involve deficits in emotional competence. The three primary ones are:
  1. Difficulty in handling change
  2. Not being able to work well in a team
  3. Poor interpersonal relations

A study of 130 executives found that how well people handled their own emotions determined how much people around them preferred to deal with them (Walter V. Clarke Associates, 1997). If you can't manage change well yourself, don't work well in a team environment, and have inadequate "people skills," how will you be able to function well as a leader? Good leaders need to have all of these skills, and the better they are at it, generally the further they go in the organization.

Effective coaches work with executives and other leaders to develop their proficiency in working with change. Their coaching helps leaders identify when teamwork is important, and how to use these skills to foster it. Coaching builds skills and broadens capacity to improve effective working relationships.

Coaching paves the way for decision makers to create higher levels of organizational effectiveness through dialogue, inquiry and positive interactions. Coaching creates awareness, purpose, competence and well-being among participants. Effective leadership coaching is NOT another feel-good exercise based on soft-skills that have no correlation to the bottom line.

In an article in the Harvard Business Review (Jan-Feb 1998) entitled "The Employee-Customer-Profit Chain at Sears", by Rucci, Kirn and Quinn, a model was developed indicating that 5 units increase of employee attitude led to a 1.3 unit increase in customers' positive impression, resulting in 0.5 percent increase in revenue growth.

One study examined the effects of executive coaching in a public sector municipal agency. Thirty-one managers underwent a conventional managerial training program, followed by 8 weeks of one-on-one executive coaching. The training included goal setting, collaborative problem solving, practice, feedback, supervisory involvement, evaluation of end-results, and a public presentation.

Training alone increased productivity by 22.4 percent. Training and coaching combined increased productivity by 88 percent, a significantly greater gain compared to training alone. (Public Personnel Management, Washington, Winter 1997, Gerald Olivero; K Denise Bane; Richard E Kopelman). That's nearly a 400% productivity increase! That kind of productivity has a definite bottom line impact.

Between 25 and 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies use executive coaches, according to the Hay Group, an international human-resources consultancy. According to a survey by Manchester, Inc., a Jacksonville, Florida, career management consulting firm, about 60 percent of organizations currently offer coaching or other developmental counseling to their managers and executives. Another 20 percent of companies said they plan to offer coaching within the next year.

Although it was once used as an intervention with troubled staff, coaching is now part of the standard leadership development training for executives in such companies as IBM, Motorola, J.P. Morgan Chase, Hewlett-Packard and many others. Brokerage firms and other sales-based organizations such as insurance companies use coaches to bolster performance of people in high-pressure, stressful jobs.

In some cases, coaching is geared toward correcting management behavior problems such as poor communication skills, failure to develop subordinates, or indecisiveness. More often, however, it is used to sharpen the leadership skills of high-potential individuals. Coaching can ensure the success, or decrease the failure rate, of newly promoted managers or newly hired managers, which is referred to as on-boarding.

"People are in a legitimate state of doubt about galloping technology, globalization, heightened competition and increased complexity," says Warren Bennis, who teaches leadership at the University of Southern California. "They need someone to bounce ideas off of and to listen to their existential grousing."

Michigan-based Triad Performance Technologies, Inc. studied and evaluated the effects of a coaching intervention on a group of regional and district sales managers within a large telecom organization. The third party research study cites a 10:1 return on investment in less than one year.

The following business outcomes were directly attributed to the coaching intervention:
  • Top performing staff, who were considering leaving the organization, were retained, resulting in reduced turnover, increased revenue, and improved customer satisfaction.
  • A positive work environment was created, focusing on strategic account development and achieving higher sales volume.
  • Customer revenues and customer satisfaction improved due to fully staffed and fully functioning territories.
  • Revenues increased, due to managers improving their performance and exceeding their goals.

The Confusion over Coaching Coaching means many different things to different people. The occupation is emerging as an organized profession and sometimes struggles to find its identity. Coach training schools vary widely in their philosophies and competencies. Many consultants and persons trained in psychology are simply calling themselves coaches with no formal training or consistent standards adherence.

In many companies and industries coaching is showing up in several ways. One way is through the use of external coaches to work with key or targeted individuals (CEOs, high potential executives, problem managers). Another way is that some companies have hired internal executive and management coaches. Some companies have trained their own management and executive staff in coaching skills.

While all of these are valuable initiatives, each has its own unique implications. How coaching is experienced by people in organizations, however, is not always clear. There is a great difference in the coaching experience that depends on whether the coach is truly independent, or not. Are they objective? Can they challenge enough? Are they influenced by the politics? Do they have a vested interest in the results?

Coaching without Responsibility, Accountability and Authority The difference between an external coach and a manager who coaches is important, because it shapes the nature of the coaching relationship. Coaches should focus solely on the agenda of the person being coached in their capacity as part of a business or organizational system. When a manager is coaching, or using coaching skills, there is at the very least implicit pressure for some change in a desired direction. That pressure is also present when an organization designates internal personnel to do coaching.

With an external coach, the focus is often on the development of the person being coached, because the coach as a neutral advocate does not have the internal responsibility, accountability and or authority over internal politics and/or ramifications of betrayed confidentialities, whether intentional or accidental.

The most effective coaching helps clients identify the relationship between their own development and requirements of the business. There is a natural tension between these two streams of consciousness that an external coach can help clarify. By asking questions designed to examine assumptions and beliefs, the mental models of the person being coached are explored. This leads to double-loop learning (Argyris & Schon), where a person can improve not only performance, but emotional intelligence as well.

One way to get the most out of any coaching experience is to not only ask questions of the person being coached, but also to gather feedback from those who work with them through 360 degree feedback. Helping clients see how others view them is a pathway to greater understanding of themselves. Getting the clients to be truly open & honest to feedback, however, is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding parts of the coaching process. Effective coaching is based on creating trust and the capacity for appreciative supportive interaction that leads to the achievement of business results.

“Nearly 15-20% of the revenue other countries.” :Mr G.Madhavan Nair

The economy may be witnessing a downturn, but the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is hopeful of registering a 25% top line during 2009-10. During 2008-09 it achievedrevenues of Rs 1,000 crore. Talking to reporters in Kolkata on Saturday on the sidelines of the presentation of the MP Birla Award 2009 for achievements in the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and allied disciplines, Mr G Madhavan Nair, chairman of Isro, chairman, Space Commission and secretary, department of space said: “Nearly 15-20% of the revenue is expected from launching satellites on behalf of other countries.” “We are also enhancing our satellite launch capability with higher payloads at a steady pace. This is expected to attract clients, from other countries and commercial organisations, who are keen to place satellites and equipment in space,” he said. When asked if the reported delay in launching satellites by the European Space Agency would lead to some orders coming India’s way, Mr Madhavan Nair said: “It may lead to more countries using Indian Polar Satellite Landing Vehicles. Revenues might also increase on account of increased use of satellite services by DTH and telecom providers.” In last year’s budget, the Centre had earmarked a fund of Rs 4,000 crore for space research, Mr Nair said, adding that Isro was awaiting the fund allocations this year in the forthcoming budget. Moving to Chandrayan II, the second moon mission by India slated in 2013, Mr Nair said: “We now know how to send satellites and vehicles to orbit round the moon, but the technology for landing on the surface needs to be indigenously perfected by Indian scientists.” “Our first lunar mission has given us an substantial understanding about entering the moon’s orbit. But ensuring the safe landing of the rover on the surface of the moon is an obstacle at the moment. Since the moon doesn’t have an atmosphere, utilising parachutes will not be possible. So, we are exploring other alternatives,” he said. Isro is also planning to launch a geo-stationary satellite within two to three years to help the Indian meteorological department’s weather-change monitoring system. Adding, he said: “The first Mars mission by India is likely to be finalised in a year. This project, however, may face a setback because of paucity of qualified manpower.”

La Prius, automobile à motorisation hybride by premier in japon
