Internet Relay Chat :

One of the main stages in Internet chat history is the introduction of Internet Relay Chat, which was developed by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 in Finland. By the year 1989 there were already 40 servers that come with this service. Gradually, the IRC started to gain popularity, and was made available in almost sixty countries.

IRC was born in the summer of 1988 when Jarkko "WiZ" Oikarinen wrote the first IRC client and server at the University of Oulu, Finland (where he works at the Department of Information Processing Science).

Jarkko intended to extend BBS software he managed at tolsun.oulu.fi that allow Usenet news style, real-time discussions and BBS-like functions. The first part he implemented was the chat page, which he did with borrowed parts written by his friends Jyrki Kuoppala and Jukka Pihl. It was originally tested on a single machine, and according to the words from Jarkko itself "The birthday of IRC was in August 1988. The exact date is unknown at the end of the month anyways.." The first IRC server was named tolsun.oulu.fi.

Jyrki Kuoppala pushed Jarkko ask Oulu University for free IRC code so that it can also be run outside of Oulu, and when they finally got it published, Jyrki Kuoppala immediately installed a server (which later became irc.cs.hut.fi). This was the first "IRC network".

Ari Lemmke's own words: "While Jyrki installed irked, I was in the same room, and had nothing to do, so I decided to embark tolsun (IRC server Sun machine in Oulu), and of course got in through a new hole in send mail. Jarkko got some friends in Helsinki and Tampere Universities to start running IRC servers when his number of users increased.

Other universities soon followed. Markku Järvinen contributed to the improvement of the client. At this point, Jarkko realized that the rest of the BBS features probably would not fit into his program!

Jarkko came into contact with the guys at the University of Denver and Oregon State University. They had an IRC network running (they had the program from one of Jarkko's friends, Vijay Subramaniam - the first non-Finnish person to use IRC) and wanted to connect to the Finnish network. IRC then became larger and were used throughout the Finnish National Network - Funet - and then connected Nordunet, the Scandinavian branch of the Internet. In November 1988, IRC had spread across the Internet.

In mid-1989 there were about 40 servers worldwide.

ircII was released in 1989 by Michael Sandrof.

In July 1990, an average of 12 IRC users on 38 servers.

In 1990, a new network set up to develop a new version (2.6) in ircd. The network named ChNet (approximately 25 servers and no users) existed a few months before the disagreement among programmers because it is dissolving.

Other major IM Networks :

A number of other chat programs were also developed in an attempt to replace the IRC. The development of EFnet or Eris Free network was one such attempt, which proved to be short-lived. This was followed by the introduction of TubNet.

Another important network was Undernet network, which attached servers in France, Canada and the USA. However Undernet also had many loopholes and was replaced with a new network called DALnet which was introduced with the aim to improve the chat system. DALnet IRC and proved to be the most viable development of the entire Internet Chat Site.

Important developments :

Unlike earlier, when chatting was only possible between two people, now you can enjoy chatting with several people at a time. Acer Liquid A1 Android Smartphone Review

Acer’s venture into mobile phone territory has so far been limited to handsets based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system. Certain models, such as the tasty S200 and F900, were pretty impressive, but there have been misses, too, including the very disappointing E101. However, with the Liquid the company is finally venturing beyond Microsoft to give Android a try. On paper, the results look exciting as the Liquid boasts a Snapdragon processor and capacitive screen. As a result, we were keen to see whether it could give the likes of the HTC Hero a run for its money?

It has to be said that first impressions are a little bit disappointing. Some of Acer’s past efforts have been found lacking when it comes to build quality and the Liquid suffers in this department too, although thankfully not to the same degree as the company’s E101. The shiny white plastic used on the Liquid’s rear and sides looks quite cheap and the side-mounted buttons, although finished with metallic paint, suffer from the same problem. It is a shame Acer hasn’t achieved a better finish, as the handset actually feels quite sturdy to hold, and is certainly better in this regard than some of Nokia’s recent models, such as the X6 (which we’ll be looking at very soon).

Nevertheless, there are some nice design touches here and there. For example, we like the way the front touch buttons are mounted flush with the screen and the fact that Acer has also added three handy indicator icons to the top edge of the phone. These remain hidden most of the time, but light up when the handset is charging or you’ve got a missed call or unread message. What’s more, Acer has also sensibly kitted the phone out with a standard headphone jack so you can easily swap the supplied headphone for your own. The mini-USB port is also completely standard so you’ll have no problem topping it up with juice if you find yourself around a mate’s place when the battery is running low.

A new reality for online consumers

The technology overlays computer data on the real world when viewed through a live video feed. Consumers can see the early results of mainstream augmented reality in entertainment, interactive shopping experiences, magazines and even mobile phone applications. As a promotion for the movie “coralline” earlier this year, pedestrians who stopped in front of special window displays saw their reflections with their eyes transformed into buttons.

But this year was a "real tipping point" for augmented reality, said Greg Davis, general manager for North America at Total Immersion. "We've seen it proliferate onto multiple screens, computers and mobile screens, in home and out of home."

Earlier this year, Total Immersion created baseball trading cards for topps co that, when held in front of a webcam, make a three-dimensional avatar of the player appear on-screen. It also designed product tie-ins for the film “Avatar” for Mc Donald’s and Mattel, with technology embedded in Big Mac packages and action figures that makes animated 3-D landscapes and characters come to life when scanned by a webcam.

These consumer-oriented applications are possible because webcams are a standard feature of most new desktop and laptop computers. The software in the applications also works with current Web browsers and does not require a cumbersome download.

The next wave of new programs likely will be for smart phones. The growth in third-party applications for mobile software platforms such as Apples iphone independent developers can experiment with augmented reality.

"You've not got just whatever Nokia is can dream, but potentially thousands of people thinking, 'What can I do with this?' " said Jackie Fenn, vice president and research fellow at Gartner. "In the same way we had a flurry of innovation around Google Maps and things you can do with that, we'll get a similar flood of innovation in these applications over the next year."

Yelp launched an augmented reality application for the iPhone 3GS this year called Monocle. When a user holds a phone's camera to view a city street, information about nearby businesses pops up on the screen. Yelp developers started working on Monocle after the launch of the newest iPhone, which had the compass, camera, large display and other features necessary to handle the application.

"We've learned that it's really hard to do this well," said Yelp product manager Eric Singley. "A lot of people are jumping into the game. They find there's a level of polish that needs to happen ... otherwise, it's confusing, messy and jarring."

Nokia India launches touch screen enabled handsets

Mobile handset major Nokia India today launched touch screen enabled handset devices, triggering competition in that segment.

"By 2012, 40 per cent of mobile devices will have touch "sensitive" screen and the market size (of touch screen models) would reach 90 million devices, Nokia Regional General Manager (South) T S Sridhar, citing a report said.

He said the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is from the same platform as Nokia 5800. Compared to the earlier version which had the option of customising only four contacts,the new model would have 20 customised contacts, he said. The phone, with a stainless steel frame finish, is priced at Rs 14,029.

Targeting consumers who are keen to experience the touch interface, Nokia also launched Nokia 5230 priced at Rs 9,389.

The 5230 is "3G" enabled has a two mega-pixel camera and comes with onscreen "QWERTY" keypad. Both devices are expected to hit the market by last week of December.

Noted play back singer Shalini launched the phones. Nokia launched its first touch screen device Nokia 7710 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Currently the company offers 5800 Xpress Music, N97 and N97 "Mini" models.

China to establish rare metal reserve system in 2010

Chen Yanhai, director general of the Department of Raw Material Industry under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said recently that in 2010, MIIT will cooperate with relevant departments to strengthen the protection of resources and establish a rare metal reserve system.

China's reserves of rare metals including tungsten, indium and rare earth all rank first in the world, and the output of the metals accounts for over 80 percent of the world's total output, and deposits of rare metals such as molybdenum and germanium also rank among the most extensive in the world. However, cutthroat competition and price wars are severely wasting China's rare metal resources.

Chen said that China should promote the integration of the rare metal industry and form an industrial pattern led by large-scale enterprise groups, and China should also organize relevant departments and associations to research and propose rare metal management methods and perfect the long-acting rare metal management mechanism.

Meanwhile, MIIT will also cooperate with relevant departments to strengthen resource protection and establish a rare metal reserve system. The MIIT will strengthen its guidance and supervision on the rare metal management work of every place in China, and help establish province-level and lower rare metal coordination mechanisms.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 Coupe

The E is the only class of Mercedes that has shown a sales increase in the U.S. market this year. Total sales soared 113.1% in November, to 4,828.

A major reason for the E's success is obvious: It's reasonably priced, at least by German standards. The new E-Class sedan is actually cheaper than the outgoing model, and the coupe is cheaper than the CLK coupe it's replacing. The E350 coupe starts at $48,925 and the E350 sedan at $49,475. The higher-end E550 coupe starts at $55,525, the E550 sedan at $57,175. Add an extra $2,500 for all-wheel drive in either sedan. (AWD isn't offered in the coupe.)

In redesigning the E-Class, Daimler (DAI) did what it does best. The V6-powered E350 and V8 powered E550 sedans are classic luxury cars that fall in the middle of the product range in terms of price and size but have traditional styling, solidity, and high-tech options reminiscent of the top-of-the-line Mercedes S Class. The sedan gives Mercedes a clearer alternative to the BMW (BMWG : IX) 5 Series and Volkswagen's (VOWG: IX) Audi A6, one that's more comfort-oriented without making big compromises on performance.

The new E-Class coupe (the version of the car I test drove) is smaller and sportier than the sedan—nearly seven inches shorter, six inches narrower, three inches lower, and 200 lbs. lighter. About the size of the Mercedes C-Class, the E coupe competes more directly with the BMW 3 Series than with the 5 Series. It's a marvelous vehicle if you can get past the fact that it isn't available with a stick shift. A seven-speed automatic with manual shifting function is the only transmission in both the E sedan and coupe.

As with other German cars, one appeal of the E-Class is the wide variety of niche models it comes in. For speed-lovers, there's the E63 AMG (powered by a 518-hp V8) that competes with BMW's M5, VW's Audi S6, and General Motors' Cadillac CTS-V. A four-seater E350 Cabriolet with a new sound-dampening soft top is due out next May. The following month, a diesel-powered E350 Bluetec is due out. A new E-Class station wagon, designed to compete with models such as the Cadillac CTS Sports wagon, will also hit showrooms next June.

The available engines provide plenty of power. The E350 coupe has a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 under its hood while the E550 is powered by a 5.5-liter, 382-horsepower V8. The E350 Bluetec sedan comes with a 3.0-liter, 210-horsepower diesel V6 that generates an incredible 400 lb.-ft of torque.

As with other sport luxury models, fuel economy isn't great. The E350 coupe is rated to get 17 miles-per-gallon in the city and 26 on the highway for an average of 20; the E350 sedan does slightly better, at 18 mpg city and 26 highway, for an average of 21. The E550 Coupe and Sedan are both rated at 16 city and 24 highway, for an average of 18. (The Bluetec isn't yet rated.)

Behind the Wheel

Tooling around in a Mercedes coupe is an experience everyone should have at least once. The E-Class coupe isn't the sportiest or fastest car in its group, but it's fun and just so damned classy and comfortable. The cabin has the quietness and solidity of a more expensive Mercedes and the suspension eats up bumps like no other. There's a library-quiet, dead-air feel to the cabin when you're cruising on the highway.

Car of the Year and Bike of the year 2009

In its fifth year since inception, the leading automotive magazines in India, in association with JK Tyre, presented the most credible and significant awards of the country - Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY). The awards have been instituted to bring the auto industry in India at par internationally in recognizing their efforts.

The awards are an unbiased and exhaustive evaluation of all the new cars and motorcycles launched in the calendar year of 2009 in India. An 11-member specialist jury consisting of senior automobile journalists from Auto Bild India, Auto India, Business Standard Motoring, Car India, Overdrive and Top Gear got together to vote for the most impressive car and motorcycle on parameters very similar to acclaimed international awards for automotive excellence.

Although there were many contenders, the Tata Nano emerged as the Indian Car of the Year with 63 points and Kawasaki Ninja 250R pummeled the competition to win the coveted title of Indian Motorcycle of the Year with 53 points.

To qualify for the 2009 awards, only all-new cars and motorcycles, whatever the country of their origin, that went on sale in showrooms across the country before December 1, 2009 were considered. Existing cars and motorcycles that have had mere cosmetic facelifts or small mechanical tweaks do not qualify for consideration.

The jury members judged the cars and motorcycles on various parameters such as price, fuel efficiency, design, comfort, safety, maneuverability, performance, functionality, environmental responsibility and driver/rider satisfaction among others. In addition, technical innovation and value for money were particularly important factors while deciding on the winner.

The selection of the winner is carried out by a simple voting system with each jury member having twenty-five points to allot to at least four cars/bikes. They can give a maximum of 10 points to any one of them. A very fair and transparent system makes the ICOTY and IMOTY amongst the most credible and coveted car and motorcyle awards in India.

Ford launches mobile broadband car

In America, land of the car, Ford has announced a new version of its SYNC in-car communications and entertainment system, which will use mobile broadband to connect to the internet, and WiFi to turn the whole vehicle into a movable hotspot.

The new system, which is being introduced in an as-yet-undisclosed selection of Ford's models, includes a range of entertainment and communication features such as real-time traffic reports and hands-free calling, as well as all the functionality enabled by internet access for browsing, emailing and streaming video. And rather than having built-in mobile broadband connectivity which would add significantly to the cost of the system, the new SYNC version allows users to plug in their own mobile broadband dongle to get online.

Commenting on the expected popularity of the system, Mark Fields, president of Ford Americas, said: “While you’re driving to grandma’s house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends. And you’re not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have.”

Ford is not the only car manufacturer to have made the leap to internet-on-wheels - Mercedes and BMW are among other big names testing in-vehicle internet systems, and such things have been fairly commonplace in Japan since around 1997. Ford expects to launch the system sometime next year in the States, although there's no word of whether such things will reach these shores.

Use technology to improve education

Educationists should embrace technology to bring transformational changes in schools and colleges, said noted educationist and former “Conventional method of teaching is not enough for students to fight global competition in this era. Only technological advances such as e-learning, internet, digital classrooms etc. can prepare them for the competition ahead,” said Ganguly at a workshop on the “role of technology in 21st century education” organised by Global Knowledge Network Society in cooperation with a publisher, S Chand Harcout.

It is a proven fact that technology has differentiated between weak and intelligent students world over. This system allows to focus on every student by multiple resources and methodologies to make learning process easier and better in accordance with every student’s mental aptitude, he said.

During the workshop, several teachers raised apprehensions on the introduction of technology in schools .“They were quite sceptical about the success of this new system initially. But as the day progressed they were all convinced that this new system will make our students more competitive to sustain in global environment,” said the former CBSE chairman.

This set up requires development and training of teachers besides infrastructure and finance. The educationists agree that schools and parents have a vital role in the successful utilisation of modern techniques. They have taken the responsibility of guiding the students on judicious use of modern tools to gain knowledge. He supported the grading system necessary to relieve the unnecessary burden of students.

This system requires 5-6 continuous and comprehensive evaluation in a academic year. Only the modern tools of learning, he said, guarantees the success of grading system. He necessitated the need of a unified board in the country for better promotion of technological advances in the education system. “I firmly believe that 90% of the curriculam in all state and national boards should be common to achieve desirable results in execution of national policies.

Thinning down the thinnest LCD module

Summary

(1) Currently thin LCD modules are obtained through edge-lit LED backlight employing low power white LEDs.
(2) LG display established the prototype of thinnest LCD module employing edge-lit LED backlight measuring a thickness of 2.6 mm for a 42" LCD module.
(3) Potential of technology exists for thinning this to less than 2 mm.

Analysis

Edge-lit and direct-lit LED backlight for LCD has been employed by the latest LCD TV sets. Edge-lit mode lends itself for thin LCD modules and hence thin LCD TV. For example a 46" LCD module for TV with edge-lit mode of LED backlight has a thickness of less than 10 mm whereas a Direct-lit mode of LED backlight has a thickness of 46 mm. The thickness of LCD module has been gradually going down with the thickness of white LED package for the edge-lit mode. Low power (20 mA to 50 mA) white LEDs have been preferred over medium power (150 mA to 300 mA) because of thermal management issues that also has a consequence of increased thickness. It is a struggle for the side-emitting white LED package to go below 1 mm in thickness. It is only fair to say that there is going to be a limitation in thickness with low power white LED package.

The total thickness of LCD can at the best be less than 1.4 mm or 1 mm. When the thickness of backlight is added, where is the room for the total thickness of LCD module to be less than 2 mm? This is a fair question.

The potential of technology for further thinning down the LCD module exists. It can come from (i) flexible LCD and (ii) flexible backlight. Flexible TFT-LCDs have been demonstrated. Flexible TFT LCDs with flexible OLED backlight can do the job of thinning down the LCD module to even less than even 1.5 mm. Flexible OLED displays have been demonstrated. In the last CES show the concept of 'flexible notebook' has been proposed.

Flexible OLED displays have been demonstrated by Universal Display Corporation, Cambridge Display Technology, Dupont, Pioneer and Samsung. Flexible TFT LCDs have been demonstrated by Sony, Samsung, Toshiba Matsushita Display, Sharp and Epson. Flexible OLED backlight with thickness of less than 0.25 mm can be made and TFT-LCD on flexible substrate with a thick ness of less than 0.5 mm can be made. With the impressive advancement in flexible LCD technology and flexible OLED technology we can positively hope for flexible TFT-LCD with flexible OLED backlight as future generation of technology.

In the end of the year Sony will launch its new version of PSP called PSP Go. The PSP Go is a version of the PlayStation Portable handheld video game console to be manufactured by Sony. Although its design is significantly different from other PSPs, it is not intended to replace the PSP 3000, which Sony will continue to manufacture, sell and support.



2010 Sony PSP Go features
Unlike previous PSP models, the PSP Go does not feature a UMD drive, but instead has 16GB of internal flash memory to store games, video and other media. This can be extended by up to 32GB with the use of a Memory Stick Micro (M2) flash card. Unlike previous PSP models, the PSP Go's rechargable battery is not removable or replacable by the user. The unit is 43% lighter and 56% smaller than the original PSP-1000, and 16% lighter and 35% smaller than the PSP-3000. It has a 3.8" 480x272 LCD compared to the larger 4.3" 480x272 pixel LCD on previous PSP models. The screen slides up to reveal the main controls. The overall shape and sliding mechanism are similar to that of Sony's mylo COM-2 internet device.

The Sony PSP Go will have 16GB of built-in flash memory, and it's expandable via a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot. In addition Wi-Fi support, the PSP Go adds Bluetooth capability to the Sony handheld platform for the first time. The PSP Go features built-in wi-fi, but no longer uses a standard USB A-to-Mini-B cable common with many devices. This latest PSP Go does not feature a UMD drive, so games are downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

Four Essentials for Improving Management Performance with 360 Feedback

This summary was written by Diane Byington, Ph.D. and is based on a paper by Frank Shipper, Investigating the Sustainability of a Sustained 360 Process, published in The Best Papers Proceedings of the Academy of Management Annual Meeting, August 7-11, 2009, Chicago, Illinois.

What can an organization do to help managers to improve their management skills through 360 feedback? Are two cycles, or more, of 360 feedback more effective than one?

This research study followed 13,661 middle-level managers of a large multi-national technology-driven firm over approximately 15 years. The managers were divided into four cohorts that participated in 360 feedback between two and four times during the time of the study. The research design used action research, meaning that the research was not an experimental design, but, rather, took place in an ongoing business setting. No attempt was made to randomize participants into various groups, and interventions (with the exception of the 360 feedback tool) changed over time.

The study found that organizations can do four things to improve management performance through 360 feedback: (1) choose a standardized, reliable survey and stick with it over time, (2) maintain active executive participation and support for the process, (3) ask managers to take the survey approximately every 18 months, and (4) provide organizational support for management improvement in the skills measured by the 360 feedback tool. These will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

Choose a standardized, reliable survey and stick with it. This study used the Survey of Management Practices (SMP), written by Clark Wilson and administered by The Booth Company. This survey has 48 items which are broken down into multiple item scales, or dimensions. The instrument has been found to be psychometrically sound through numerous studies.

The instrument was based on Wilson’s Task Cycle theory, which has been validated and demonstrates the impact of particular skills on managerial performance. These skills include goal setting, planning and problem solving, coaching, conducting a performance appraisal, exercising control, and reinforcing performance. Managers were given skills and performance feedback in the form of a report summarizing the data from boss, direct reports, self, and peers. Results were confidential and were used for development purposes only.

The same 360 survey was used throughout the organization during the entire time of the study, allowing the longitudinal research to study meaningful changes.

Maintain active executive participation and support for the process. In this instance, the Chief Executive Officer and an organizational task force reviewed a variety of instruments and selected the SMP for use throughout the company. The CEO and other top administrators remained supportive of the program throughout the time of the study. Individual data or reports were not revealed to corporate or divisional officers, but aggregated results were reviewed at the corporate level and at divisional levels.

The 360 process also became part of the culture of the organization, both formally and informally. The Managerial Task Cycle, based on Task Cycle theory, was adopted as the organization’s model of what good managers do, and training programs were linked to specific phases of the Task Cycle.

Managers at all levels were aware that their executives supported this program and were following their development. This step is crucial for institutionalizing the 360 process.

Ask managers to take the survey approximately every 18 months. Managerial skills are learned and developed over time, and this length of time between iterations seemed to be the most effective in terms of measuring a significant change in skills.

Four cohorts of managers were followed as they progressed through at least two iterations of the 360 feedback assessment (Figure 1). The study’s highly statistically significant results indicated that notable changes in managerial effectiveness did not occur until participants had been through the 360 process at least twice, and that additional iterations increased the participants’ effectiveness. For example, the earliest cohort included managers who took the assessment four times over a period of years. These participants increased their managerial effectiveness from 39% to 60% between the first and fourth iteration. Over the period of the study, starting effectiveness levels increased, probably because of the support shown throughout the organization for the 360 process. The latest cohort increased their effectiveness from 46% to 53%, after only two iterations. The other two cohorts’ results fell in between.

The author concludes that major change is not likely to be demonstrated based on a one-shot participation in 360 feedback. Follow-up organizational support and efforts of the individual managers led to significant changes in managerial effectiveness.

Provide organizational support for management improvement in the skills measured by the 360 feedback tool. The organization found that the most effective support included a one-day in-situ management workshop with the majority of managers from the same work site. In this workshop, participants received a report of their results and instructions on how to interpret it. This was followed by a discussion on the resources available to managers to improve specific skills, how to develop such skills, and what skill to focus on for the biggest payoff.

By the end of the day participants were encouraged to have created a preliminary learning agenda. Participants were encouraged to share their results with their boss, peers, and direct reports and to ask for input on which to base their final learning agenda. As part of the learning contract, participants were expected to experiment with different skills and techniques, to practice them, and to receive feedback from direct reports and peers. The organization also provided training support via a variety of sources.

As part of the study, managers were interviewed to identify why some of them made significant improvement and others did not. The results were that 100% of the managers who had developed learning contracts had improved, whereas the same was not true for those who did not develop learning contracts.

Finally, managers from the same facility were organized into intact teams, asked to share problems and to develop action plans to solve them. Members of the team who scored high on their skill profiles were asked to serve as mentors to others.

Thus, the 360 process was integrated throughout the organization and supported on every level.

Finally, meaningful change yields a competitive advantage for managers. Previous research has shown that improvements in managerial effectiveness can yield improvements in productivity. Thus, an ongoing 360 process can be a valuable business practice that leads to sustainable improvements in managerial effectiveness.
