DATC Aerospace Science Experience

A group of Davis County youths this week took the first step that may one day take them or at least their dreams to space. The teens took part in rocket planning, building and launching during the Aerospace Science Experience at Davis Applied Technology College. Chelsea Bishop, 15, said she was interested in learning about various career paths related to aerospace. Jason Calvin, 15, said scientific aspects most grabbed his attention. Mitchell Foote, 16, said a love for space exploration sparked his interest in taking the aerospace class. The one thing they all had in common was a hope that their rocket would launch successfully without breaking up in the air. "It takes a lot of work to build a rocket," Mitchell said. "I just hope mine won't tear apart." "I just hope my rocket will launch," Chelsea said. "I'm exploring to get an idea of what this is all about." "I'm excited to watch the rockets go off," Jason said. "I'm hoping mine will go pretty high." Instructor Jim Haws, a teacher at Mueller Park Junior High, said the junior high and high school students learned important critical thinking and sequential thinking skills during the week, and these skills guide scientists, researchers and builders through step-by-step processes. "Whether they decide to be an engineer, a designer or a teacher, they will run into a lot of the same principles taught in this class," Haws said. To start the week, the students got classroom instruction about composite materials technology, which gives them an understanding of how dissimilar fibers are blended and held together with resins to make very strong, lightweight parts. Haws said composite technology has been most beneficial to space technology, where parts must be lightweight yet strong enough to withstand great forces. Now, he said, that technology is branching out into everyday life, being used in building everything from automobiles and boats to household appliances and sports equipment.
