B.C. automobile dealers

British Columbia auto dealers are reporting better days this summer, mirroring a national improvement in overall car sales from their near-collapse last fall. Across Canada, automakers reported 139,901 new-vehicle sales in July, a 6.4-per-cent increase from the same month a year ago, according to industry data compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. The big increases involved particular brands, such as Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen. Others, such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan, saw sales decrease. “I wouldn’t think we would be at boom numbers, because at boom numbers we were selling not just new but a lot more used,” Robert Goulet, marketing manager at Brown Bros. Ford and Lincoln in Vancouver, said in an interview. “But [sales results] are definitely extremely, extremely positive.” And he thinks Ford benefits from being the only domestic auto manufacturer not to take government bailout money. Goulet said buyers are being drawn onto Ford lots (he said all dealerships are seeing good traffic, not just Brown Bros.), by the manufacturer’s employee pricing incentive, which gives all purchasers the same discount normally given only to Ford employees.
