Nano technology in practice for long:Dr S Mohun

Dr S Mohun, vice chancellor of PRIST University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, who is attending a global conference on science at VBU here, said on Sunday that nano technology has been in practice in India and China for long. In ancient times, he said, nano particles were developed in mud and used to make ceramic goods. Today, nano technology is used for making a diverse range of products. He said this technology is also used for deriving different colours of gold. Mohun said besides cosmetics, nano particles are also used for making medicines, particularly for cancer treatment. He said that on being injected, medicines made by nano particles only touch the cancer cells in the body and no other parts. Moreover, medicines prepared by nano technology do not have any side effects, he added. As many as 350 scientists would present their papers at the science conference, which comprises seven technical sessions. In another session, Dr Ram Krishna, director of Zoological Survey of India, who too was honoured with a gold medal, in his keynote address on "Alien Invasive Species in India: Fishes", said that alien species, which have become dominant, invade natural communities and cause immense harm to the growth of various species of fish in India. He said that Article 8 (h) of the Biodiversity Conservation Act calls for measures "to prevent the introduction, control or even eradication of alien species" which threaten the eco system.
