Electronics Help Obese Teens

‘It knows if you’ve been bad or good…’, familiar words from a Christmas song, are being sung at the University of Southern California to the tune of a million dollars, thanks to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Washington Post, researchers are trying to convert those words into a series of text messages that will motivate obese teens to get active and lose weight using an accelerometer, a heart rate monitor, GPS device and a sensor that gauges electrical conductivity of skin. Data are relayed to a phone, and then transmitted to a server. If the sensors conclude that you’ve been sedentary too long, you get the message. The device can also tell if you’re running, walking or engaged in other physical activity. The plan is to strap the belts on about two dozen obese high school kids by the year’s end--both to track and nag the subjects for a week. Hoping the instrument should become so attuned to the wearer that researchers call it the KNOWME Network, urging teens to become healthier. Will it work? Stay tuned….
