Porsche eyeing - dominate the Indian automobile market

Porsche SE, one of the most well known luxury and sports car manufacturer is all set to spread out its operations in the Indian market. Germany based Porsche, the Stuggart is now developing strategies especially aimed at expanding their presence in the Indian automobile market.
Presently well known Porsche cars such as the Cayenne SUV and other sports cars such as the Cayman, the Boxter and the 911 have to be attained in India via import route. The first thing the company plans to do is increase the number of its dealerships which is currently 11 including Mumbai and Delhi showrooms. Rod Wallace, MD Precision Cars India (the official importer of Porsche) stated that the company is looking forward to expand its presence in the Indian automotive market by attracting more and more Indian consumers to buy Porsche luxury cars. He also said "India has a growing number of people who want to enjoy their success and are not shy of showing so by buying luxury cars." According to Wallace, Porsche has already sold nearly 168 automobiles in 2008 ranging from Rs 50 Lakh to 1 Crore and now the company is aiming to lift these numbers to 200 in 2009. New Porsche outlets should be opened in other cities like Ludhiana, Cochin, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Wallace also clarified that Porsche's interest currently does not lie in increasing sales volumes in India, but rather in increasing their presence and networks here. He is sure that the desired numbers are bound to follow soon.
Porsche's most popular brand, the Cayenne is contributing nearly 70% of its sales to serve the company's purpose on the Indian shores. Porsche is also now planning to bring in a diesel variant of this SUV in India, which was displayed by it at the recent Geneva Motor Show.
Wallace stated that although Cayenne Diesel is mainly intended to focus on the European market, but it was the remarkable demand for this car that it got from India that made them take this decision. However, due to limited production, only 19 units of this SUV shall be rolled out for sale in 2009 in India. Wallace also stated that the company had no plans as of yet to start assembling Porsche cars in India, keeping in mind high import duties. He also affirmed that as Porsche has carved itself a special niche in terms of a car manufacture and maker in Germany, currently they had no plans to start assembling cars in India.
