Cornell university : Make cheaper batteries and fuel cells

Fueled by $17.5 million in federal stimulus money, a new Cornell University research center has been created to find the materials to make better and cheaper batteries and fuel cells. Cornell, in Ithaca, has been selected to host one of 46 federal Energy Frontier ResearchÕ7 Abruna Õ Centers that are charged with laying the groundwork for a new energy economy, Gov. David Paterson announced Friday. The U.S. Department of Energy recently awarded $777 million to fund the centers for the next five years. Cornell's Center for Nanostructural Interfaces for Energy Generation, Conversion and Storage will work on developing catalysts and other materials for batteries, fuel cells and photovoltaic generators, said Hector D. Abruna, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology who directs the research center.
