Perhaps we're cynics, but Reckless Getaway looks like a game made in anticipation of a license that never happened. It has a lot that's familiar, but what gives things away is the car – a 1970 Dodge Challenger, exactly as seen in Driver: San Francisco.

Reckless Getaway's a top-down chase over sixteen levels, where endless police forces try to ram you off the road, while powerups, coins, and potential stunts are littered all over the course. The car accelerates automatically, and your only inputs beyond tapping powerups are steering left and right, so it's an achievement that the handling is deeply satisfying, with the torque as you recover from crashes or oversteers just right and countless tricksy moves to pull off.

Bashing the police left and right, screaming through gaps in traffic and jumping over canyons is great fun, so it's a pity that there's a progression system here to prevent anyone enjoying themselves too much. Alas, merely completing Reckless Getaway's levels is not enough. To unlock the later worlds, players must either be incredibly skilled from the off or go back and grind earlier levels for more coins and a three or four star rating.

This is not Trials HD – it's a rambunctious, in-the-mixer car chase with random elements spread over long courses. Perhaps it's just us, but demanding players grind in a game like this seems needlessly punitive.

In-game, Reckless Getaway has great moments – missing oncoming trains by milliseconds, blasting a police car out of the way to access a huge jump, or just swerving at the right moment and watching pursuers collide head-on. But structurally it puts up an unnecessary wall in front of them. Great concept; questionable delivery.
