Japan brings 'car wars' to India

Global automakers lined up their global launches at the 10th Auto Expo here to vie for their share of Indian auto market and break the hold of local players in one of the fastest growing markets in the world.

Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen and General Motors unveiled new compact car models. Honda Siel Cars India announced the world premiere of the New Honda Small Concept.

M Takedagawa, President & CEO Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., said, “India is a focus market for us. The World Premiere of the New Small Concept at the Auto Expo is a testimony to this.” The Car that is yet to be named will be launched in 2011.

Similarly echoing how India has become a battleground for small cars, Kazuo Okamoto, Vice Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “Our tagline is World First, India First’.

Living up to this assertion, Okamoto unveiled the Etios Concept car. Vikram Kirloskar, Vice chairman of Toyota Kirloskar said the company will aim to capture 10 per cent of the Indian market by 2015. Currently Toyota has a meager three per cent share.

Okamoto said after ascertaining the Indian experience the Japanese global auto major will export Etios to other destinations from India.

Another global auto major that jumped into the fray to tap the compact car segment was Volkswagen. Europe’s largest carmaker unveiled the ‘Polo’ with a petrol and diesel variant. “If you want to be a major player in India in the mass market, small cars are the way to go,” Jochem Heizmann of Volkswagen Group’s management

Board said. The bottom line: From now on, it will not be an easy run for Indian car manufacturers.
